Pic added!!! pg 3.... Sticky chick question, chicks out of bator

I think its 2 days. The chicks shipped from a hatchery don't eat or drink for days and they are usually fine. They can live on the yolk for days.

Well now I have 6 hatched. This is the slowest, most spread out hatch I've had. I got my first pip 36 hours ago. Currently I have 3 eggs pipped, and 17 with nothing.

I'm starting to lose hope for those seventeen. Among them are 6 cayuga duck eggs, 3 marans eggs (both of which none have hatched of) 1 silver phenoix and 7 more blue laced reds.

The three pips are all blue laced reds, and I think they may hatch yet as they're still moving about.

How long before I need to take out the chicks that hatched yesterday afternoon?

Boy. the person who said that the humidity would spike when the hatch begun wasn't kidding. My humidity jumped to85% as the birds started emerging. On day 20 I got 20 chicks hatched with another 19 eggs in the bator. Starting day 21 and most if not all of the remaining eggs have piped at least a little, and this morning it looked like two more hatches were on the way.

Ok, came home from work to 9 hatched. I have 15 unpipped now and one NEW pip. The first hatched have been in there now 30 hours.

Either I have to take them out tonight, or leave them in there until this time tomorrow, or I guess I could try to do it in the morning but I have a tendancy to keep hitting snooze and am afraid I wont wake up early enough to do it before work. This is a genesis and I think I could get the humidity back up relatively quickly if I took them out tonight.

I have no idea if the other 15 will pip and hatch or not,

I dont want to leave the hatched in there too long, I know they can go a few days without food and water, but I'm wondering if it's too hot in there for them now that they're all fully dry...

need advice, please! Thanks.

Angela, this is one of those time when you have to decide what risk is more important. The single pip is the only risk of the unhatched eggs at this time, but those chicks are a priority now. I would remove them quickly. Check the water and close up the bator again. Keeping fingers crossed for more pips/chicks overnight.

Well, I took them out. More news, and more questions.

I knew one egg was still pipped, but when I had it opened, I took out a few broke egg shells, well, one broke shell half was stuck to an unhatched egg, and I went to pull it off and it peeped at me!! I rolled it over, and it was over half zipped and I didnt even know! That one is very active and peeping, it should be out soon.

So I added water, and closed it up. Then, with the chicks out, I noticed a third egg rocking.,...so I looked real close and saw a little bitty pip.

My humidity is at 8, and the temp dropped a couple of degrees but it stabilizes back real quick.

Sooo my questions now.... sticky chicks. A few have shell pieces stuck to them, and a lot "look" sticky, even though they are totally dry. I know this is a humidty issue, but I dont know which way....too high, or too low?

The pic of them looks good. The one with a bit of a sticky look is actually pretty normal and that should fluff up in a day. I'd guess if you get some gooey or a lot that didn't hatch, humidity was too high. You'd have to do a break open analysis to confirm that though. That's the only way to be sure.

Congrats Angela,

Yes, I took mine out too, I would take them out once or twice a day, as it was crowded and the older ones would peck at the babies trying to get out of their shell, or step on them at only minutes old, the great thing about the genisis, is it has no problem recovering after opening.

Your Babies are GORGOUS!!!!

All the chicks in the pic except one are blue laced red wyandottes. The one on the far right looking into the camera is a silver pheonix. I didnt order a silver pheonix, he came free with an order of blue laced reds.

Breaking this down into breeds...only counting those that made it to day 18...

I had 9 blue laced reds of out of 14 hatch, with two still pipped and moving (crossing fingers) (the one that was zipped is out!) so three that show no signs of hatching.

0 of 6 cayuga ducks.

I'm really sad about my ducks, as I was so hoping for them. I dont know if I will try a duck/chick mixed hatch again.

Jody, what do I look for if I open them??? I really really want to know whats going on here as I have another hatch due next week.
