PICTURE OF FOX

This is a sick fox. I really doubt it is a coyote, just by the length of the back legs and the black markings. I would say it was a sick red fox.

It really doesnt look very fox like but that may be due to the thing being sick. Here in Georgia we have coyotes in many different colors including black and reddish brown. I really didnt know that coyotes came in those colors maybe they are hybrid coyotes and the fish and game just dont fill us in. Whatever it is it needs to be disposed of sine it is looking rather infectious.

I think it is a sick coyote. I hit one going to work one night with my truck. Looked exactly like that one except healthier. Legs too long to be a fox. They are getting to be a regular sight here in eastern NC.

That looks like a young coyote and they can be BAD news! Get it gone fast. Either trap and remove or #### . Those things will kill little children, little cats, dogs, calfs, foals, whatever they get their teeth into. There are bad in our area and we have GP to make sure they stay on the other side of the creek. During foaling or calfing time you can hear them and it is right out of a horror movie. IF any wild animal is brave enough to stick around and not run off there is something wrong with it.

We have coyotes here and they are various colors. We can hear them howl at night. My husband has trapped a few and has one mounted - head only - why I do not know.

I have seen them up close many times. I am pretty sure it's a coyote.

Here are some pictures of Red Fox with mange. As you can see, mange really takes the "foxy" look out of a fox.

And now the coyotes:

Since both look similar in such severe cases of mange. The best way to tell is by size. Fox will tend to be more large cat sized, while Coyote are most dog sized.

By comparing the OP's critter to the leaves and grass in the picture, I am thought it was more fox-sized.

Also, if you look closely you can see fox-like field markings. White on the bottom jaw and black on the legs and of course the reddish fur of what's left.

I've seen both fox and coyote up close and personal(alive and dead) and I vote fox. Although, if you call your trapper out to doeal with it, he/she will be able to tell you which one it is.

Is the post of the lastest picture the same animal?
The picture that is a link in post 21? That is a coyote not a fox.
We are in Middle Tennesse near the Ky border. Our foxes here are very small more like a huge house cat not a cat in the wild. Our bobcats are bigger than the red foxes. They have shorter legs. Our coyotes here are not big like the picture posted which really looks more like a wolf. Our coyotes here are small like a smaller medium size dog not as big as labs. They have longer legs and do not have thick coats, puff tails just not as full as the red fox. I have only seen one grey fox in our area and had to look twice to make sure of what it was. There is a beautiful red fox who lives somewhere near us because last year it would come and take away my ducks, it seem to only like the females. It never bothered my hens or chicks just the ducks. We saw it running off one night. Then later we saw it run over in the road. I wonder if hens taste better than drakes? Anyway the first picture posted looks like our coyotes we have here not our foxes; but NH is a different climate and habiate(sp?).

I agree with Kim (although our fox are waaaaay bigger than "cat-size"). I think that most people who think a fox has short legs (I keep seeing "legs are too long for a fox" comments) are just used to seeing foxes skulking around, close to the ground. When they stand up, they're actually quite leggy.

They have pretty long muzzles, too. A full coat can disguise it a bit.
