Since we are on the piggy subject, what does it cost to raise a pig per lb? ?Assuming you have the shelter and pens already? Someone wanted to sell us pig for $3.50 a lb cut and wrapped. thought that a bit high but I know feed is high and we don't have access to free produce or bread. We would have to feed pig chow.

Actually it is cheaper to buy one at auction here in Indiana. Around $70 or more for 200# hog. Cost $190 to have it butchered. So around $2 a pound. We did 3 at home last year. Saved $540(averaging in the cost of grinder). I have grinder and got a cuber for Christmas. We already had the rest:wrap,Mandrel, hoist, paper, tape, magic marker. We did not make chitterlings, Souse, or bologna! I have not made a smoker yet; but have plans and material. That really is the kicker is smoking it!

I plan to plant 1-2 acres of field corn to feed the goats, feed out a steer, and a pig this year.

Will I have to supplement the steer and pig's feed other than the corn that I will feed them out with???

I figure it will cost me about $500.00 to grow an acre of field corn. That's a lot of corn. Also, a lot cheaper than paying $8.00 a bag for shelled corn.

I have a friend that does this to feed his goats and cows. It's amazing. The goats will eat the corn off the cobs and all the shucks.

I have registered Berkshire hogs. I have 9 total. Oops make that 18. Mama had babies.
