Pigeon Bulletin Board?

That sound wonderful - your family and the building projects! Mark off your loft location and try to have at least 2 sections if you need to limit breeding, 3 sections if you want to race(may as well plan for the future. lol). 4x6 is a good size for each section - big enought for you to step inside. You could start with one - just build with future additions in mind.:D
Thank you.. its been quite the adventure for sure. ;)
If I've learned nothing else raising critters and children, starting small is fine but always leave room for adding on and changing directions...:lau
I do believe i can manage that size for a start. Most of what we build is from refurbished materials or free finds and have plenty of supplies around here. Im just not sure about design yet. I want to be sure they have what they need and I can work in the loft without a lot of effort.. im not a spring chicken anymore and need to be able to handle as much of the work as possible with them myself ... so please, any suggestions that you all have, feel free to fire away! :love

If I had more space(I'm waiting for the kids to stop using the trampoline!) I would have a shed at least 10x6 or 10x8 so I can walk in and do what I need to. Cleaning, feeding, checking babies etc. My loft is ok but small. I'm constantly checking that nothing fly over my shoulder! Not really a problem if their homeset but I have two breeding pairs that I'm not sure are. So definitely something you can walk in and close a door behind you. Sheds are also easy to assemble and modify. Also wear a dustmask when your in with them because they have a high protein content in the dander and droppings. This can cause respiratory problems for humans if your exposed and unprotected over a period of time.

Awesome, thank you! :love
We keep masks around here for our 18yr old son for when pollen is bad, he has anaphylactic reactions to ragweed. So I have that coverd.:D
Btw, if you're handy with welding, trampoline frames can become a great aviary... this is the one dh and dd3 built for her phesants, she has 4. So its a decent size for them, for now anyway.;)
Not the best pic but you get the idea..

Not sure what time you took pix, but mine never flew that late. It can also be just the photo since it is cloudy..

It was early, ~10am, cloudy weather.:)
Got to tell you - A hawk flies by and they took off after him as a group. They either chased or escorted him away. Another time 5 of my birds were up and a hawk flew by - again they fell in behind him and followed a short distance before breaking off to head back.
eta Red tail of course.

Well that is the power of a flock in numbers. I get a kick out of seeing my local hawk get chased by 2 or 3 small birds. The hawk just keeps flying and has no way to stop and make a U turn in mid air. The small birds, which were not even crows were trying to chase hawk away from their nests presumably.

Me too! The small fast birds are always harassing the hawk, even landing on her back and riding like a surfer! haha... like you say, nothin' the big slow bird can do but sigh and fly on.
That's why I'm glad they stay together and don't panic.

I'm not good at photography ... but these are mine.
