Just a bit of an update on the last bird I lost. It was a young bird and not one of my breeders. That in itself is good news. However it was from my best pairing and was the one showing the most potential of this flock of now 14 young birds. I had him earmarked with a splash of red marker on his wing which could have been the reason the hawk isolated him out.

I have a release of 21 birds for a meet and greet of the surviving members and families of the Devils Brigade this August. They were just recently awarded the Congressional Medal of Honour. My dad O. Murray MacKinnon was a member of this US and Canadian Brigade in WWll.

Sorry you lost that bird. I am curious what plans you had re his potential?

It pays to check your squabs over every day. I recently corrected one of my squabs with spayed leg (you have to catch it before the squab is fledged as a rule or you will be forced to cull). This a video that may help you solve the problem if it should occur in your flock.

In my situation I had only a small narrow elastic.

It was cutting off circulation to the foot.

My answer to the problem was to eliminate the section of pop straw and use
two zip ties to serve as bracelets to hold the elastic in place.
My solution looked something like this.
It was also a lot easier to install.

Pigeons suffer longer it took a month to correct.
Some fanciers even leave it on longer.


This squab missed the window and should be humanly culled.

I am absolutely hooked!
I have read through ( which you all know from my likes..) watched a few of the videos but didnt read articles yet. My eyes are glazed over.. I will however go back as time permits and my vision allows and read the articles linked.
Fabulous read I must say! Soooo much to learn and do before I decide on birds... my biggest problem right now is making myself wait till spring of next year...

Start planning your loft now. Then go ahead and build...... Never get the cart ahead of the horse. Good to have housing done to your liking rather than make a rush dash,,,,, and then have to figure out how to modify. Things may look or turn out insufficient in one respect or other.

That's what im tryin to do.. this time.. I've spent many years with cart ahead of the horse... bad habits die hard tho..
But I really do have to wait till spring to add any new birds so I am looking at different loft designs and tryin to put together plans that will work well here and for the birds. Im excited...but reining it in.. Dh and the boys have much to do as it is, getting ready for winter around here, so adding a project now might not be a good thing. Once winter settles in he'll be ready to be busy with something new...and I'll have just the thing waiting!

around here keeping em busy isn't too difficult ... We're still in the building process... we live in a steal arch building, living in it as we build in it. And the boys and dh have built one bungalow for ds1 and starting on one for ds3. Plus wood to split for winter and critters to keep up with..
Tbh, dh is probably praying Im not serious about pigeons but deep down he knows better...

That sound wonderful - your family and the building projects! Mark off your loft location and try to have at least 2 sections if you need to limit breeding, 3 sections if you want to race(may as well plan for the future. lol). 4x6 is a good size for each section - big enought for you to step inside. You could start with one - just build with future additions in mind.
