Well,,,,,,,,,,,, I do see where the problem is. The Boards are too far apart.
Here are plans for a typical Sputnik. The boards have a 4 inch opening between them. The drop down is 16 inches in this diagram. It functions such, that a pigeon is nor able to land on a surface flying up, since its wings are spread open.

Here are some pix of what I made. It is able to be entered from 2 sides.

Made this from boards that I had laying around. These are leftover flooring boards. The ridge has 1 1/2 inch PVC pipe spacers. A threaded rod holds it all together secured.
The yellow and green colors are not a FASHION STATEMENT:gig
It is what I had left over of some good quality Porch & Deck Paint:thumbsup
Ran out of yellow,,, so finished with green.

Aviary is a dog cage modified.

In above pix , can see a landing pad I installed for the pigeons to easily access the top of aviary where Sputnik rests on.

My pigeons never even tried to escape.:frow Maybe they tried when I did not see.:idunno None succeeded:thumbsup

You can modify what you have easily. I just estimated the spacing with those red markings. Comparing to size in pix of the 2 x 4 cross braces you have. The 2 verticals look like 2 x 6 to me. :idunno Plus 2 x 4 in middle.
So the way I suggest is;;;; using 7--- 1 x 3 boards for verticals. Same for a couple of cross braces. Make sure to start high enough with the cross braces so that pigeon has sufficient head room to enter. (in your arrangement here, I would suggest placing cross braces on top side rather than bottom side of Sputnik Grate) There are ways to avoid the cross braces, but you would have to get creative in fastening the individual vertical boards.
I just wrote 1 x 3, but that is just approximate size. The boards from pallets are just fine for the size:thumbsup
What is important ,,,,,,, the size of the openings. (4 inches) (10 cm for my Euro friends:)) I just went out where my Sputnik is in storage, and measured just so I would not lead you wrong.

That looks really good and easy to make. :thumbsupI thought about making one when I made my trap but it was a bit cumbersome for my loft. I think they would trap alot easier with one as they always stand on top first looking down to get in.
Oh, and 4" is 101.6cm! :plbb

Are you sure? I'm going with 10.16 cm = 4in....:old

Edit - It would be 101.6 mm.
