Pigeon Talk

Well heres the story. They did lay two eggs but didnt sit on them which didnt surprise me two much since we had them 2 weeks and they JUST paired. Well i had a roller pair that just layed their 2nd egg so i thought that they could handle a third egg and squab. Well after a week i discovered that the roller eggs were infertile. But i let them cuntinue incubating the port egg. I expect them to lay again about march but i hope earlier so i can maybe show them at luisville pigeon show next year.

Well i went to put coconut oil on it about an hour ago and it was real bloody and dead. I think it may have repositioned and injured itself. Anyways there is always next years breeding!

Well dammit. I haven’t checked my pair again, but I’ll start watching them closely after tomorrow. At least our weather is in an upswing.

There is no doubt in my mind that with the right circumstances (combination of thirst and being taught how to get the water out) that pigeons would learn how to operate this.

During WW2, before heat seeking or smart missiles were invented, BF Skinner designed a missile piloted by a pigeon (yes, a real pigeon). You heard that right, a pigeon guided missile. The pigeons actually steered the darn things, and yes, when the missile hit the pigeon would of course die like a kamikaze. If they can do that, they can learn the water cup things! And I'm sure there's good reason Skinner never thought to try this with chickens!

That was awesome!

That's one concern I have.. Im hopeing for more suggestions in that area too..

Congrats!! Cant wait to see them! :celebrate:celebrate:pop
I'm excited for you too! I hope your hubby approves the conversion.:fl

I have suggested using retired campers to make chicken coops many times in past postings. I also suggested using Garden sheds for same re-purpose use as well. When you are ready to make the move, take some pix of inside and we can make suggestions then. Some of my views differ from other peeps here, and I will explain them.:old

No matter what humans try, mice seem to always win. I would mice proof the outside, and NOT REMOVE THE INSULATION. In your area,,,,, the insulation would be very beneficial during summer to keep the loft from becoming a metal skinned sauna. JMO. :old
Besides,,,,,, I have no quarrel with mice. :gig:lau

You would remove most of the interior, but you can also utilize some of the cabinets and drawers to hold feed and supplies inside out of weather. You can also just use a portion of camper as loft and rest for your alternate needs.
You would of course modify thing so there is sufficient ventilation year-round. I would run a power roof vent (frequency to be determined to need) to keep pigeon dander to a minimum. That is one of my plans when I get loft going again.

I may sound heartless, but caveman has the biggest View attachment 1601926around,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
I believe in nature making decisions in such matters. This refers to pigeons, chickens, and other pets. This does not imply/suggest that injured pets should be left abandoned. We treat their injuries/sickness the best we can.
With humans,,,,,,, I believe EVERYTHING POSSIBLE should be done to save a life:love

X2! :goodpost:You have given more thought to the camper loft idea than anybody I know of. I was going to suggest a powerful ventilation system to keep the dander and other airborn particles to a minimum - but you already did.:highfive: Also a great idea to reserve part for storage. Amazing how much gear and food, grits, baskets, broom, brushes, scrapers, etc. that accumulates for their care.

I'm sorry your little port didn't make it. :hugs There will be many more for you. I've had 2 or 3 that I found dead when newly hatched. It's always sad and I can't bring myself to throw them in the trash so I just lay them gently where some of my pets are buried and let mother nature take them back.
