Pigeon Talk

He did the absolute worst option.

Didn't get the bird medical treatment, didn't give it a quick and humane death, didn't even let the predator eat it. Left a severely injured domesticated animal to die of exposure or starve or be mauled hours later, suffering all that time.

I wonder what would he do if this were a more popular stray domestic animal? A kitten or a dog?

I agree with all your points here.

While you are possibly right, you are a bird person. He had no idea what to do. He made the choice that I think most non-bird people would make.
I hope that it rested and recovered, and flew away.

IDK who it is, but I'm glad he appeared to help it, and gain some interest in the comments, both good and bad I'm sure. Watch him join BYC and ask us for help. haha

He's a TV personality. Ever heard of “Dirty Jobs”? He hosted a show about jobs where people get yucky dirty, stinky, filthy, etc. And he would get right into the yuck with them and help do the job. The slogan was something like “they do the jobs so the rest of us don’t have to”. Several other shows like Deadliest Catch, etc.
He also created a scholarship program for kids to get jobs working in manual trades. Welding, painting, etc etc, manual labor stuff. He says hard work pays off.

He was an opera singer too! I think his first tv job was on one of the home shopping networks. QVC?

That was an odd decision but I think it was done with good intentions. It’s easy for us to root for the pigeon, but what about the hawk? I don’t dislike hawks- they just provide an inconvenience to my hobby- but I’d feel bad if I saved a pigeon from a hawk and the hawk starved because of it, unlikely as that is. Personally though I disagree strongly with his choice because it has the potential to prolong the birds suffering. But who knows, maybe if it was undisturbed in the bush it was able to rest and fly off.

I think they’re doing a new series based on the old one called Rowe’d Trip. I saw something about it a few months ago

Probably shouldnt,,,,, but I am just gonna say one thing. :p

first off, everyone has had some great points! :thumbsup

I am impressed with his decision. Although it might have been best to let the hawk eat it's prey, can you imagine the backlash he would have gotten if he did do that, and it was found out? Pigeons are a tough prey item to get, simply because, they are faster than hawks. The only way for the hawk to catch them is when they are not paying attention. If the hawk was successful at capturing it, it is a avid hunter, who likely caught another prey item the same day.

I think the pigeon probably was okay. Pigeons have a large amount of blood, partially due to their high body temperature. Even a small cut means lots of blood, so I do not think the pigeon was injured severely. I would guess it recovered and flew away. I think it was a better choice than trying to train a adult pigeon who has been free to do whatever it's whole life, to live in a cage. a young one though, it would have worked out better. So, was he supposed to let the hawk eat it when the pigeon was coming to him for help? Am I supposed to not chase a hawk away off of one of my birds if it is caught, just so the hawk might not starve?

the pigeon may have been hurt, but not suffering. It was standing without problem. My birds have had cuts, missing toenails, broken legs, a slice in the back, and all have recovered with little intervention. I'm sure that one did the same.

hard to see, but that is a a deep cut, after it was washed out. there was also one under the wing and in the stomack. A little rest and it was flying next week.

I didnt see any bands? Was it domestic? My opinion would change if it is a domestic one, as I would have wanted him to rehome it, or keep it.
