I had one Birmingham Roller cock who was a definite overachiever. He would build the nest up to 8 or more inches. I'd figure when the hen was about to lay and take it down to normal size so that the eggs did not fall out.

Eggs are usually 2 days or so apart.I'm actually on my way home from a week long trip right now. I think she laid it either yesterday or today, I've been watching with a camera and had a friend go check. She's been sitting in there for 48 hours straight besides a couple five minute breaks. I thought they usually laid two eggs though?
Ok, so I'll just be patient, haha. If she's incubating the first egg already though, won't it hatch first? Isn't that not good?Eggs are usually 2 days or so apart.
Hmm, interesting. That is the way it always goes,, If the male is not sitting his turn, than the incubation is going slower. After second egg gets layed, the incubation is likely to go Full Bore with them taking turns sitting. . Squabs usually hatch a day apart. When they hatch much longer apart,, then the older one usually eats the lions share of feed, and the younger/smaller struggles to survive. It is the natures' way to make the strongest survive.
If you do encounter something similar,, there are things you can do.
Take away Big-Junior for periods of time,,(into warm home) so parents feed the underdog as well. You will know if Lil Junior is being fed by observing his crop.
Wishing you best success with this hatch.![]()
This is just my thinking. In the first days,, the development action is slow. When the warmth is removed, action stops,,,, but egg does not die. The mortality is more pronounced during later development,, when egg gets cold thenWhy does it make the incubation go slower?
Hmm, interesting.
Why does it make the incubation go slower?
I feel bad for my poor little girl taking full time.
I could pull a baby after a few days and hand raise him. I was hoping to get a friendly one anyway. I definitely don't want to lose any, so if that happens I'll try to help the little ones. Could I supplement the feeding of the littler one at least with Kaytee formula?
This is so exciting, I can't wait!
Thank you so much for your help.
