Pigeon Talk

Wow! I have an early night and missed all the excitement! Well done @h2oratt. You doing good with the pigeon! I'd agree that it is probably a roller pigeon. Very nice looking!

That's great news! I agree with cavemanrich I'd feel happy to release them again. I found that if I released one, it wouldn't hang around. Since I can release all mine they tend to stay and fly loops of the neighbourhood. Your making good progress! Have you done any more vids?

Have you got a pet carrier that you can put it in?
He he is in a dog crate. I wanted to take a picture of him standing but he is trying to fly now.

I’d say this is how many pigeon keepers become pigeon keepers.
Is it coo’ing or making any sounds?
No no sounds, we are thinking he is old by the numbers on his band. 12 should mean he hatched in 2012 right?

Is 7 old for a pigeon. ?

I was thinking maybe he might be an oriental roller pigeon that got lost while being flown, since they have sort of fan-like tails as well, if his tail isn't as extreme as a fantail:

I think he does look like this!

:goodpost: Those are the clearest illustration of the 'correct' way to hold a pigeon that I have seen! In the 2nd one with the pigeon's chest barely touching the owner seems to relax the birds. In the first pic, you can take your other hand and cup the chest whilst holding the beak between your fingers to pose the head and show off eyes and face.
Thank you, I will practice but I was trying to take a picture with one hand.

I haven't mastered that skill - one handed picture taking - yet ! :lau
Lol, will he be ok on gamebird or should I buy something else? I am going to scan Craig’s list for lost birds.

And call NPA again today.

I know what his head looks like , dying to see the rest of him. Does he have lacing on his wings like the photo @Pyxis posted?

The gamebird might be too high in protein for long term. Approx 11% to a high of 15 or 16% protein for race birds is typical. Is the GB ration pelleted and most importantly is he eating it? He could be used to pellets or he could be used to a seed mix from his prev home. If he eats pellets then an all flock type is a better choice. If he doesn't recognize or eat the pellets then you can easily make him a proper seed mix using basic wild bird mix as your base and add some corn, safflower, and field or maple peas.

Thanks!! When I first got mine I noticed the man held them differently, so I looked it up. :p
Clever girl you! :highfive:Our friend @Fields Mountain Farm will look like an old hand when she gets her first birds this spring.:)

@h2oratt - good idea about CL. Could you place a found ad with NPA and have the claimer identify the band #? IDK if they have a Found section.
Anyway you will probably hear something from NPA within a few days.:fl

6-7 yrs is not that old, they often live 12-16 yrs.

Here are a couple more pictures of him standing in the dog crate. His tail feathers are pretty ragged. He really isn’t laced. He looks like what I would call blue in a chicken in his hind quarters area. I don’t like the way his head is sunk back into his body

. Is that normal?

Wow, that is definitely a fantail, i forget if its the English or American type that has that extreme head posture. It's normal for the breed but I don't care for it either.

Edit added - No wonder you asked if it was a pigeon.
