Pigeon Talk

Quaker parrots are feral here. They shriek in the trees and my one tiel Freddy outscreamed them no question. You could hear him six houses down the street. And he just did it for fun!

Lol, they can get going sometimes, can't they? Fizz really likes to yell at his bell when he's banging it around. It's a mix of screaming, human words, and bell ringing.

My sun conure was the loudest parrot I've had, hands down. But then, they are pretty 'famous' for their volume. At full volume, they can be heard a mile away. Luckily, Larrikin never really screamed to scream, he'd mostly just scream his contact call.

Where do you live that quakers are feral? I know there are colonies of them in New York City and also in Florida, I think.

I am just south of Chicago. There's a flock of about fifteen which nest on light poles near a local high school. Their nest is a mound of sticks as big as a small car.

Yes, they're one of the only species of parrots that build nests :) They think the big colony nests are part of the reason they can survive in the cold climates.

It's too bad that they've been made illegal in some states, because they're afraid they'd be an agricultural pest, I guess. In reality, they're probably just filling the niche left open from when humans drove the Carolina parakeet into extinction.

I have 3 cockatiels and I'm taking care of a 30 year old conure for a friend. One of the cockatiels is very friendly just very loud. One of the other cockatiels isn't that friendly but never screeches and talks more than the other one. The third cockatiel isn't friendly at all so all I can do with her is look at her and talk to her.

My first parakeet was probably louder than my three cockatiels put together. She liked to scream. The cockatiels done more whistling than screeching.
I almost got a sun conure once. Someone was selling it with a nice cage for 50 dollars. Owner had passed away, family didn't want it. But someone beat me to it. :rant
Probably for the best.
I really don't have a good place to put a large cage in the house I have now. Too many drafty Windows.

I don't recommend any kind of parrot be kept as a single pet, but especially not a budgie because they are just so designed to live in a big noisy flock of other birds and their behavior is so much more natural with company. All parrots are as a rule very demanding and very emotionally sensitive and suffer if they cannot be with their partner virtually all of the time. You can still develop a strong bond with a pair of birds if they were well socialized when young.

Parrots kept alone, unless you are there for them every minute of every day, often feather pluck and scream and just have not very good lives.

Do you have any plans to get Olive a mate/friend?

Yep. That's another reason I tell myself not to get one. Plus it would likely out live me and I don't think any of my kids would want it when I'm gone. Its so sad for them when they lose their owners!
