I like them. We have pine trees so I just rake up a bunch, and bag them and store thru the winter. I have 12 bags now. And when I clean, I just pull out all of the needles with a hoe, and then add another bag or two. I also have a small little door in the floor that I can just push them through, and then take them out underneath. Another plus is that the birds just go and make nest with the needles. I don't have to provide best bowls. But I'm really excited about a dirt floor. @WVduckchick doesn't have to clean much, right? That may have changed when she got moreI do scrape across it when I scrape the perches and the poop board but the paint scrapers I use don't quite cut it on the mesh. I'm thinking maybe I'll try a grill brush or something.
I've seen the dirt floor in yours which I quite like, however that isn't really an option for me right now.
How do you like the solid wood floors? For the first day or two that I had my squeakers and they weren't all perching I laid some pieces of wood down for them so they didn't have to sleep on the mesh floor and I found that a lot of them ended up tracking the poop everywhere and getting covered in it. I was thinking I might try and cut a piece of plywood to lay over the floor and test out how I feel about cleaning it. I like the pine needle idea and I have no shortage of them either.
Thats a plus for showing. I love your avy! Those are good... love the tippie-toes!![]()

I haven't raked mine out much, but its been winter. The pen they are in used to be occupied by OEGB chickens. They were able to keep the ground scratched and "tilled" pretty much on their own, unless it got damp and then hardened. I have one pen that stays kinda hard and solid, but this one seems to stay more loose ground. Will have to see what the spring/summer brings.
Saw this pic online, makes me consider some straw, since it looks similar to mine, but it might be too humid here. My chickens are pretty good at scratching up the straw in a hurry, but I don't know how the pigeons would be with it.
*not my pic*

I have a mesh floor in mine. There is also a sliding tray underneath to catch all the poo and spilt seed. I use stiff brush when I clean it and push the bristles through the mesh. That clears most of it. The biggest time I had a problem was when they were molting. I picked most of the feathers out by hand and I hoovered underneath for the rest! What do you all use for the floor in your lofts and why?
I opted for hardware cloth when I built mine thinking it would be easy to clean but frankly I'm having tons of issues with stuff getting stuck in it, especially feathers. I'm also not a huge fan of the little molehills of pigeon crap its creating. I've been thinking about building a tray to go underneath when it warms up a bit but I'm still not sure what to do about the mesh getting clogged.
This is what I have right now. That slanted board in the back is because the inside frame of the floor is 2x4's which the wire is stapled onto, however when the poop falls in between the mesh and wood it is impossible to scrape off so I leaned that board up to mitigate the problem.
