Pigeon Talk

Aren't canaries renown for their singing? How musical are yours?

Yes they are. Until two weeks ago I had just the two males, and they would sing together all day long, beautiful but LOUD. Since pairing them, Mozart has mostly not been singing, they do that to attract a mate and he has one so he does just one or two quick songs first thing in the morning. Milo is still singing throughout the day. The females don't make much noise.

Best luck to Milo winning over the new lady!:D

I had a canary growing up.

He was aptly named Tweety Bird (I was two my brother was five).

He mimicked words and was VERY tame. Would sit on our laps and steal fruits and stuff from our snack plates. I don’t remember him very well.

I don’t know how long we had him. ‍♀️♀️♀️

My father bred them and he was the last of the line. I just remember we weren’t home when he passed and I cried cried cried. My brothers cat got him after he hit the fan flying around (my god mother let him out ) . I only know because my mom tells the story often of how my GM cried after she accidentally killed our bird.

It’s been almost 30 years and she still gets upset when it’s brought up.

I digress.

Your birds are gorgeous. I love that orange male. Tweety Bird was classic yellow.

.

This sounds like a budgie, because these are NOT things canaries will do!

They are very hands-off birds almost all the time and they cannot talk. But budgies can, and they come in canary yellow.

My mom has told a story that my dad let the canary out be cause it sang off key, how can a canary sing off key?

I just saw these now... OMG. The eyeliner on those babies! How adorable is that!! What breed are they?
They are araucana chicks. Lively little buggers! Poor old speckle just sits there whilst they jump all over her!
You have some beautiful canaries. Is it true you can change the colour of them by adding colourants to the water?

Maybe he was a budgie.

I was little and don’t remember exactly what he was. There’s a picture of us holding him and he was very very bright yellow.

I have parakeets now. They’re different from what I remember him being.

My pigeons have taken to waking up with the chickens in the morning. The chickens wake up when my DH starts throwing on lights getting ready for work. Between 3 and 4 AM.

I’m currently up with the baby listening to the dogs howl and bark at the coyote. The coyote are howling back and sound quite close. I woke the birds up this morning. I can hear them talking out of my window.

It’s funny on these still mornings like this how much you can hear even through closed windows.

I would like to share some of my canaries who are starting the first nest of the year.
Thank you for sharing this post brings back memories of my late mother. Vera also had a pair of canaries and raised a brood of young. Sadly my mom was murder in 1991 RIP with 69 trips around the sun. Thank you again for sharing your post brought back a flood of fond memories.

That's awful. I'm sorry to hear that. I hope that the perpetrator was swiftly brought to justice.
