Pigeon Talk

I come from the opposite side. My bird is a companion animal and lives in the house. I wouldn't let her outside to fly our hawk filled suburb any more than I'd take a dog to run on the expressway but everyone's relationship with their animals is different. Birds like to fly but their lives in the wild are short.

--------

Olive doesn't like people food, but she will still beg for a taste to make sure she doesn't want it and will sulk if you don't share.

Oh my goodness she’s so precious :love:love

I understand your perspective very well! I’m a lot like you in that way, but not for these pigeons? Not yet at least?? If it does progress.. it’s progressed a lot with my chickens ever since I got them as I have the pleasure of caring for my darling CB who has a severe scissor beak. I’ve debated on making her an indoor chicken before but again my other darling of a feline Mina would see herself to some chicken dinner unfortunately.. the same one who would have a double pigeon dinner if I bring the small feather children in. She’s a curious cat and you know what they say

Of course I am then reminded of Lup AKA Number Seven ... my half pet chicken from the farm I worked at before I moved. I had her as an indoor chicken for a while when she had some health issues. I also took all 7 of those hens (the production leghorns,,was that this thread I mentioned them in??) home one night for a nice bath as they were infested in lice

I get your side. But, a birds life in the wild may be shorter than a house bird, but those birds in the wild are the healthiest, smartest, and strongest birds I've seen. The birds that I loft fly are by far my healthiest. I think tosses are good for them. What I'm not saying is to fly your olive, why she would be hawk bait! But I encourage everyone to fly their birds. Hawks or not.

I always forget about cars... we do have a lot of traffic by our house as we have 2 major plants right down the street. All the people who work at said plants come down our road.. the rush hours are usually right as the sun is rising/before it even thinks about shining and then again at 4-5pm

I toyed with the idea of chain link kennel fencing (10’x10’x6’) to increase the run size for my little coop...there’s a way that could be connected to the pigeon pop door I’m sure...

What wire did you use? I can’t really tell, there’s too many lines for my eyes to focus..

That’s good to be reminded of thank you!! I completely forgot that vital fact about them, my brain is in chicken mode thinking the pigeons can/will just hide under the trees
I’m still shocked I’ve made it this far without seeing one flying around, even with my smaller chickens now. I’ve seen them a good drivig distance away but never around my village! I’m always looking up when the boys scream out when birds fly over, always just them pesky sea chickens..

In the garden section at Ace Hardware I found 4 ft rolls of wire fencing with openings about 2" x 4" that closely matched the kennel. I also chose the dark green color over the normal silver metal color, again to blend with the kennel. I used Zip Ties to join fencing pieces to top of kennel and to each other. So easy.:)

@sdm111 Mr Sam this is a great place to learn about pigeons. I dont have any yet but ive been lurking cuz my DH wants some. Ive learned i shouldnt worry with it til we move to our final location or ill chance making rhem home here to the rental an hr from the final. Learned how to treat worms most recently and got to watch Mr CCUK build an amazing loft. Ive decided with their guidance ill use two of my shipping pallets that are 5x3x4 stacked ontop one another to make a tall loft thatll be pretty good for our first pair ;)
