Pigeon Talk

My first birds ever were 8 chicks I purchased at a local hatchery on hatch day in 2016. I became fascinated with them and was very sad when I had to rehome them (to join a pet flock on a local farm). I kept them in a coop that was going unused in my neighbor's yard until she decided that chickens no longer fit her plans for the garden.

You can see more pics of them in my album...

That's a real shame you had to let your chickens go but they went to a good home. And at least your pigeons don't need so much space!

Yes, its doing just fine! I have locked all birds in due to hawk season so im not sure how it would do free flying. Im glad yours are doing good sitting. I have an egg due to hatch in a week or so (the other egg was infertile) and then two squabs about 2-3 weeks old.

I haven’t checked my girls eggs yet. I assume, like chickens etc, their eggs can be candled? Is that how you knew one wasn’t fertile?
How soon can you tell by candling? I assume mine will hatch in 10-12 more days.

Just a bit of a random post this but I was at my local hardware store last week and a van pulled in next to me. My son said 'dad look at the bottom of the picture'. I laughed and had to take a picture!

You could prob be able to tell now. Ive gotten to where i hold it up to the sun and can tell that way. But a flashlight would work better though. Will you keep your hatch?

I haven’t even touched the eggs, and don’t handle her very often. I have no idea what she would do if I try. Lol
Broody chickens, I know those too well, but this is the first for me with pigeons. :p
And yes, I hope they hatch. I’m anxious to see their parenting skills, and their offspring, so I’m excited about it. I might just try candling tonight after dark.

If you decide to candle, approach with care. Some birds are very 'egg protective', and will wing slap at you. Eggs are rather delicate.

Thanks for the warning.
I’m going out now to lock up my ducks. I’ll take a flashlight and just see if she will let me stick it under her, against an egg.
