I once had a bird slip out and when I tried to grab it, I pulled all the feathers out of its tail. It was loose for 2 days, because it wasn't trained yet. (It is now in my group that has been tossed 90 miles.) It couldn't slow down or stop, so it was quite a pathetic sight. Also is there anything I should be giving him for his tail? I lifted up the feathers and saw the holes at the base of his tail where the big feathers were ripped out. He doesn't seem to be in pain.

To be honest, I wonder... have you considered someone trying to catch the bird and grabbing only it's tail feathers, like me? The hawk may make more sense, but if it's relatively friendly, it may have been around people.
