Oh c**p. That sounds like it. I did wash my hands after I handled it. It had the watery feaces and the neck twisting. I've cleaned my loft today but I'm going to give it a disinfect tomorrow with jeyes. I hope that I haven't introduced anything.

Did you put it in your loft? ....ssay no! Are you just worried you carried something on your person?

I read a bit more about PMV. Being a reportable disease in UK and potentially carried by wild wood pigeons, maybe you would consider vaccinating for it.

No. It didn't come home with me. But I did handle it. I know atleast two of my birds are vaccinated maybe six but not the rest.

Just finished cleaning and sterilising my loft top to bottom. All the feeders and drinkers have been bleached and fresh feed, water, grit and pickstone. I used virkon s to sanitise. It's a broad spectrum anti viricidal so hopefully if there was anything there it isn't now. This is a real worry for me now. Although I do carry out reasonably good biosecurity this caught me off guard. I did wash up before going into the loft but if that was enough I don't know. Time will tell. 2-10 days if nothing I'm in the clear. This goes to show the importance of good biosecurity, I just hope that I'm lucky. It could also be that the wood pigeon didn't have it and was in its death throws. Idk.

I hope and expect your birds will be fine. You didn't even bring the injured bird home. Since you are becoming the pigeon rescue guy in your area you'll have to consider PMV in the future. Twice I've had ferals follow mine into the loft, using the bob wires! So biosecurity is never 100%. None of mine are vaccinated.

I think young birds are more likely to succumb to PMV while older birds with good immune function can often recover.

Thanks. I've done what I can. The only risk was from my clothes. I think I'm going to have to reassess how and if I can help people with injured pigeons. It's difficult to say no because I want to help but I can't risk my birds. I need to get mine all vaccinated. It's not that expensive in the grand scheme of things.
Anyways onto a lighter note I think that lucky(the one who had the broken leg) is now alpha male! There was a standoff followed by a punch up and lucky was left on the top perch! And I think he has paired up with one of the first hatchlings, Boris! Who I think may actually be female!! I caught them smooching on the top nest area! He was preening her face and strutting his stuff! When they saw me looking in, well the look I got!

Morning @sourland I think I see you online. Any idea when I can try to put my hen whose neck was scalped back in the loft? She's not happy in the small cage and seems good except that her neck is scabbed over and bare of feathers. If its too soon I'm setting up a bigger 2.5x2.5x3.5 cage for her outside. Temps are now in the 40s outside and she needs to be acclimated ... I just don't know what to expect. Her 'mate' is back with his other wife but I think he will still view Doba as his property also? Help me decide what to do now?
