@biophiliac, I would be tempted to try monitored reintegration. Understand that his new mate may try to defend her 'property' - him and any nest site they may have claimed. As long as she is healed, give it a try, but keep an eye on them.

Thanks! I'll try that today. With pigeons you just never know for sure.@biophiliac, I would be tempted to try monitored reintegration. It's part of what makes them so interesting. Monogamy, polygamy, cheating, same sex couplings, good parenting, poor parenting ------------ and the list goes on. Hmm, what other species does that sound like ?![]()
Just finished cleaning and sterilising my loft top to bottom. All the feeders and drinkers have been bleached and fresh feed, water, grit and pickstone. I used virkon s to sanitise. It's a broad spectrum anti viricidal so hopefully if there was anything there it isn't now. This is a real worry for me now. Although I do carry out reasonably good biosecurity this caught me off guard. I did wash up before going into the loft but if that was enough I don't know. Time will tell. 2-10 days if nothing I'm in the clear. This goes to show the importance of good biosecurity, I just hope that I'm lucky. It could also be that the wood pigeon didn't have it and was in its death throws. Idk.
Morning @sourlandI think I see you online. Any idea when I can try to put my hen whose neck was scalped back in the loft? She's not happy in the small cage and seems good except that her neck is scabbed over and bare of feathers. If its too soon I'm setting up a bigger 2.5x2.5x3.5 cage for her outside. Temps are now in the 40s outside and she needs to be acclimated ... I just don't know what to expect. Her 'mate' is back with his other wife but I think he will still view Doba as his property also? Help me decide what to do now?

You've got it all going on in there! Never mind chicken TV you got a proper soap opera going on! Since when did you start keeping Kiki in your loft?!
I have all of that going on in the loft - not helped by the original gender imbalance of 2 cocks, 6 hens. Doba, Lonan, and Kiki are prime examples. Lonan and Kiki paired up and were raising chicks when he cheated on her with Doba who raised one baby on her own. Then Doba managed to steal Lonan away and they raised 2 together. Meanwhile Kiki retained all rights to the nest box and occupies it instead of a perch. Having lost the big nest box to Kiki, Lonan and Doba occupied a lesser one. Now Lonan has moved back in with Kiki and all the happy baby raising has produced a gang of jerky teenage cockbirds. I don't even know who injured Doba!!
...I could go on... its basically a soap opera or telenovela in there...![]()

.... there's also the pair of hens who abandoned one baby at 12 days old, moved to another nest box and successfully raised a baby there... I have enough episodes for a full season!“As the loft turns”
