Hello, this is the new member you guys mentioned. The byc rules say that i am able to join. I was not aware of that specific rule about age so that is why that certain post got deleted. Anyways, im enjoying byc! Thanks
So nice to meet ya! :frow
Welcome to the flock!:love
Yes i have 24 and adding! I have birmingham rollers, racing homers, parlor rollers, and white homers. What about you?
Wow, thats awsome! I dont habe any yet. Will probaby wait till spring but may have some feral ones in a couple of wks if we can trap them.. long story..:lau

What is the flight pen for? Are you not loft flying your birds?
I let them fly once or twice per day. I call it a flight pen but its really just a large aviary that adds another 4ft x 10ft for the birds to spread out a bit. I currently have 18 where I planned for around 12. I have been told I should not let them fly in winter so that's another reason. So far I'm still letting them out.

edit added Its also great for baths and for me to sit with them in a dust free environment.

That's cool. Are you going to add some perches in that flight pen? Would be cool! If I had something like that, I would also add a bath that could automatically be filled up with water, and drained!

Yeah, I'm going to add some t-perches although they do enjoy just walking, ie strutting, around out there too. lol I've got one 4ft 2x2 perch and a small natural branch right now. That would be a time saver bath! I have to carry water from inside.

I have to carry water from inside.

Me too, from the hose around my house, but it's still a pain. With something like what you have, you could design something pretty nifty. Tub with a drain plug at the bottom. Fill it up with a hose through one of the spaces in the fence thing, then drain it when they're done!

Like this? Expensive though.

I call them back in when i want them back. To train them to come back when called, whistle every time you feed so when you whistle they will come flying in for food.
When you fly your birds, do you let them come in when they want to or do you keep them out and only let them back in when you want them in?

Not currently, i only have three as of now. They are all unsexed so Im not risking flying any at this moment untill i get a pair for my breeder coop. And i dont race now although my birds come from some racing blood (can home 600+ miles) I would like to eventually, although its expensive to start up. How far can yours home?

You are smart to breed from your trio before releasing any. It sounds like you know a lot about pigeons. :thumbsup I started with six hens and 2 cockbirds and their offspring were the first ones I let fly. After they were homeset I then let the original birds out.

My birds are from racing stock too and the 2 original cockbirds supposedly have Houbens blood. I like to believe they would home from a long distance if trained. I am embarrassed to say I have done exactly ZERO training tosses.

The expense would prevent me from racing in a combine but a One Loft Race might be possible sometime.

How did you become interested in pigeons?

What part of the world do you live in?

When are you going to make an Avatar?

Show us some pics of your birds?

:D
