Pigeon Talk

I released 7 birds roughly 48 hours ago on a extremely foggy day. Against my better judgment. No sign of any of my birds yet. Now the weather is blizzard conditions with extreme white outs. They were some of my best breeders in the group.
I am starting to worry as they did not have an adequate breakfast to begin with.
Im so sorry. I hope they come thru. You have some good blood in youf loft so im confident the mojority will return. Hope they return soon!

Please keep us posted. :fl

I like to thank you for your kind wishes. I just hope this serves as a warning maybe to some of the other fanciers on this site. Always error on the side of CAUTION.

Most of my so called expert advise has come from actions like this.

He'd wait until I took a drink, then he would swoop in and drink any Coke that was left in the little ring on top of the can. Silly bird.
So I guess that whole thing about birds not being able to pass gas is a myth? I was always afraid mine would drink my pop!

He was a smart little thing. I taught him to say "Pretty Bird" on purpose and then he was off from there. He learned to say a bunch of things. When I pick my parrots up, I don't ask them to "step up" but rather I always find myself saying "come here" - just happens, not a conscious choice, lol - and so he learned to say it. He would be on his cage and if he wanted me to come get him he would shout "Hey, come here!" at me.

He was the sweetest bird, too. Everybody loved him and he loved everyone too. Never met you before? No problem, he would like you to give him scritches, please. He would greet people who walked in the room by flying to land on their heads, then he'd peer down over your forehead to talk to you. My mom didn't like him on her hair, so she actually got a special hat she could wear just so he could land on her and talk to her.

I lost him to illness when he was just two years old. He got really sick, and I rushed him to the vet. This was before I had chickens and kept a stock of medicine on hand. Nowadays I would have dosed him with Baytril to get some meds working on him and then got him to the vet ASAP (where they probably would have just prescribed Baytril). But then, I had no medicine, and they left me sitting with him in the waiting room of the emergency vet for hours before finally putting me in a room, where I took him out of the carrier and let him sit on my chest. We then sat there for another further hour before he died, right there on my chest at the vet.

Yes, my little bird wasn't as important as the 'real' pets coming in like a dog that got hit by a car. That dog might have been dying, but so was my bird, and we got there first.

It gets worse. After he died (this was when I was young, about 15), we took him to our regular vet for our dog and cats to have him cremated. The receptionist said to my father, after telling him the prices on cremation and him telling them to go ahead with it, "Are you sure? It's just a bird." Right in front of me, as I stood there, holding my dead bird that I loved dearly in a box, just wanting to have him cremated.

Ah man, I made myself tear up writing this. I still miss Shika very much.

Sorry to bum everyone out, lol.

Hey. . only used bird people get it! That's what we are here for.

The one and only time my dad ever told my grandmother off that I know of was over my pet parakeet that passed. It was suffering and my parents didn't know how to put it down or what else to do so my mom took it out and used the pellet rifle
I was 10 I think.
I was telling my grandma crying about it. . she said to me "well that was stupid. Why didn't you just wring its neck?":rolleyes::rolleyes:

Oh my goodness my parents were livid. :p

I just know that they will return. They are weathering it since it is blizzard. Just because they left without breakfast should not be a BIG factor. They only have a short flight when they can navigate.
Only harm, would come from predators, which are difficult to prevent.

I feel so sorry for your bad luck. Hind-sight is always 20/20 as older folks like you and I have had the chance to observe many times. :hmm I will pray to hear that some or all make it back anyway. :fl Thank you for sharing even the hard experiences my friend.

I feel so bad for you. We all do things even when we think we shouldn’t. I don’t know you very well yet, but from what I’ve seen, I would wager that you had the best intentions, and felt you did what you should do. I very much appreciate your words of wisdom, and your words of caution. I’m still hopeful for you that they return. :hugs
