They have more feathers than I expected.

I can see down all the way down his leg to the feet! Makes sense as they will have feathered legs.

I use the term FUR,
I also say that silkies don't have feathers, but rather Fur.

@WVduckchick do not worry about getting good shots of them, give the parents a few days and they will be getting off more often. Do you leave food in all the time? If not feeding time is when i might move the parent off so i can check for canker and get a good look!

How often do you guys check on your birds? I typically go out 5-6 times a day.

This evening I was basically just trying to make sure they were still alive. Didn’t get much of a look at them, but I did see movement of one, so I assume all is well.

Check for canker? School me please.

I don’t leave for work until after daylight. Flexible schedule luckily. So I check before work, as soon as I get home, stay out as much as weather permits in the evenings, and last check at dark. Weekends I’m in and out probably 20 times lol. Hubby laughs, but I like observing them and taking pics, etc. looking for ailments, issues, arguments, anything out of the ordinary.

I’m still unsure whether my red roller Java is male or female. I had been assuming (hoping) male. This evening, I watched Clyde either fighting or courting Java. I couldn’t tell which! If it were female, would Clyde try mating her? With Bonnie having just hatched his babies? Or were they more likely sparring/fighting/playing? The rollers stay out of the house where Bonnie is with the babies. Mostly on the ground or ramps, etc, I have never seen them mate, although I thought he was trying once. Now I’m leaning more toward female.
Does the green on the chest mean anything?
I am going to look into DNA testing.
Thoughts anyone?

I check at about 4 day old. You gently hold them and open their mouth and if you see "cheese" it has canker. If it does treat accordingly.

I am mostly retired so I'm usually out there at least 3 times in a day, often more. I can check the aviary from my window. It's literally 6ft away and the birds spy on ME from the high perches.!

That's how I would check in an older bird. For babies I think you want to check the umbilical...or is it the yolk attachment area on the belly to be sure it is smooth and pink. I really don't have solid experience with this. Fwiw I've never had canker in any of my birds.

Ive only had it in 1 bird. It may be best if you would check through the crop?
