Pigeon Talk

Sad but valuable lesson learned. One of the squabs didn’t make it. Looks like it’s been dead for a couple days or so. But the other seems fat and healthy.

Im so sorry. Was it cold there? Sometimes the parents cant fully cover them from the cold so they dont make it. But on the bright side this guy will start growing very rapidly.

Sorry you lost one.:hugs I have had 3 babies in my loft that didn't make it and passed at just a few days old, once with a single mom/hen and twice with my pair of hens - they only managed to raise one of two nestlings. I think often we just don't know why. I guess that's why I tend to check on the hatchlings often the first few days, looking for movement and full crops.

The remaining satinette is so cute with his wing shield feathers coming in.:love
You may want to check his navel area to make sure its clean and dry.

Last weekend when they hatched was fairly warm, but the past couple days have not gotten above freezing. Last night was 22°F !! Supposed to be warmer the next few days though.

I knew I should have checked closer, but I didn't want to cause them any undue stress, so I opted to stay back. I was sure I was seeing movement from both. Like I said, lesson learned the hard way.

This afternoon is supposed to get sunny, so I plan check the survivor out better.
Thanks for the support!

Oh Nat.. Im sooo sorry! :hugs
The other one is lookin great tho! :love

The other one is definitely being fed well. I was shocked how heavy she feels, for 10 days old. Wow! Nothing like my little bantam chickens lol

WV,,,, your remaining squab is doing good since getting all the nutrition intended for 2. Also being covered over with a parent.
I think the cold was the factor in others end. When I had some hatch during winter in my loft, I placed a heatlamp under the spot where the nest was. It made the nest slightly less cold. I discouraged winter hatching with plastic eggs for that reason.
