Pigeon Talk

Couldnt you get it from the same breeder but ask to get unrelatee blood? How many birds did he have?
I suspect it will come down to what may be easily available in your area... at least to start with, then see where it goes. If that man hadn't had the Satinettes listed, I may never have considered them. Strombergs has single Satinettes for $60 each, which I would maybe consider paying for Bugsy a mate, but shipping is another $80! I don't know how I'll find her a mate. :hmm

There are a couple of breeders with different breeds close by and up to a couple of hours away from me but I haven't called any yet cos I wasn't really sure if it was gonna happen.. Im planning on making some calls this wkend..:fl

Dont feel commited to me. I likely wont have extras. Good luck finding breeders! And getying them to answer! Leave them a message because they often dont check thier phone but once a week;)

Do you want one or multiple breeds? Or are you not sure?! I reccomend getting breeds with multiple things you like about them. Like i got rollers so i could watch them fly and try to get some coler breeding going.
Not sure.. depends on whats available. I love the rollers.. and I like differently colored birds too.. Im just not sure about flying them. I'll only be able to get a pair or two, or a few squabs if available and I cant afford to lose any at this point.. ugh, idk...

Oh I know.. and I certainly understand. I do like those Ports tho.. Maybe you'll find you have some extras to sell in the next year or two.. :hugs
I will deffinetly leave msgs.. and call often..:D

@sourland How many birminghams did you have at a typical time? Did you just do birms or did you have oriantal rollers or anything else? I love hearing your stories and advice.

I started with 10 pairs. After the first crop of young birds I got rid of half of them based on the young they produced and lack of performance. At the end I maintained around 12 breeding pairs, a kit of up to 30 previous year's birds being flown out, and 3 kits of that season's birds - somewhere around 140 birds at my high points. Cooper's would kill more than half of my flying birds each year. In addition to the loft in my BYC interview I have another larger two compartment loft one side for flying only and the other for breeding or flying.

I thought about getting Oriental rollers, but really don't like the look and temperament. Also their flying/rolling patterns don't thrill me. With my Birmingham rollers I could put all the weaned young on the loft floor, and all cocks in the flock would feed the whole lot. Orientals would most likely scalp every squab.

The guy that I got my Satinettes from only had this pair. I guess I could message him on FB and see where he got them. He’s not very communicative, but he would probably answer me.

And the more I look at ports... the more I drool over them!

Here’s Bugsy this evening. Crop is full, I saw Bonnie in there while I was feeding chickens, so she is apparently still feeding her, at least.

I scraped the floor (disposed of those shavings etc) and added another small bowl of parakeet feed. I still haven’t seen Bugsy out of the nest bowl except once.

Also attaching an outside view of their box.
And the last pic of the white box is currently occupied by my bachelor bantam cochins, but look how easy it would be to modify for pigeons! The whole front door opens upward, so I could easily remove it and modify inside to suit the pigeons. It’s large too, because I originally built it for black copper Marans that I no longer have.

I also love the set up. I bet the one with bantams will be perfect for pigeons! :yesss:

@sourland yes, oriental rollers can be mean!

@WVduckchick yes, ports are an awesome breed. I wish they were more populer. Are you considering getting some? Im hoping that i can show at the louiville national show this coming year! Im going to try to get some eggs laid NOW so they hatch right at the beggining of the year! Maybe then i could get some jacobins for two @Pyxis lol.
