Pigeon Talk

So pretty!! :love

What's your current head count?
Is that last one the same as your avatar?

Stiil 18 atm. Two unplanned squabs hatched soon after two were killed by hawk. My avatar was the daughter of the one in the pic and she was one of the two killed. They do always take the favorites.

Also atm one of the oops babies #744 now 7 weeks is in poor shape with crop canker I believe. Gave the second pill(ronidazole, 10%) this morning. I have hir inside for warmth but she can't eat and has lost weight. She strongly resisted feeding her thawed peas. I believe this is due to significant canker lesions in the esophagus/crop area, probably making it difficult to swallow. It may have spread to her sinus as one eye is mostly closed. Lesions only became visible in the mouth 2 days ago and are larger now. She has always had a struggle being the much smaller of the squabs. The organism that causes canker is present in most pigeons but is normally suppressed by a healthy immune system. If I had started treatment sooner her chances would be better.

edit added: breathing is labored, more today than yesterday. Again, I suspect this is due to canker in the sinus and esophagus.

Update on Loper - He is starting to get his green and purple neck colors which further supports my estimate of his young age on arrival. He is also beginning to assert himself with some of the much larger cockbirds of my loft. He is bantam size in comparison but very feisty.
