Pigeon Talk

Its ok.. Im determined to get some..even if just one pair to start with.. heck, Id be happy with a couple of ferals at this point..:D
Ferals are just as smart and lovable. I have come to appreciate Interloper as much as any of my flock. He was so determined to join up! Here he is sleeping on the edge of the loft vent cover...

Within 2 days he claimed a perch. He's not tame to me but is very smart, an extremely agile flyer and just so cute to watch!

Here he is getting huffy with me in defense of his perch.

I say ferals don't get the respect they deserve!:old

I do believe he is trying to get you in trouble! :lau

Have you ever seen any ferals around your property?

I love these! :love They look like little tough guys! :lau

I'm still trying to find that picture of my grandpa with his prized fantails.

Olive is now to the point that she knows on top of the door, over the newspaper, is where she goes potty and she will go as far as to hold it at night until I let her out in the morning and she can get to the paper. She spent three hours in her cage this afternoon while company was over and I noticed she didn't go in that time either. Sure enough, I let her out and she goes to the paper, then flies out to look out the front window, and and then flies again to the paper a few minutes later and goes again.

I'm not sure how she knows where she should and shouldn't go, but she does. I've done only a little to reinforce it, and I never discouraged her from going potty in her cage, that's on her. So her cage is always clean, but I hope that if she really has to go while she is confined she does and doesn't try to hold it past her ability or something.

She doesn't have as much aversion to going when she's out on the enclosed front porch, but everything out there is pretty easily cleaned - indoor/outdoor carpet, old wooden tables, houseplants and not much else. I'm just really impressed she seems to understand the front room, except for the newspaper, is off limits.

And Shadow and Java are enjoying some time in my wood shop. I tried to get video of them rolling, if I can figure out how to get it from my Wyze cam.

They so definitely need a bigger tub. I'd say minimum size of a cat litter box. Bigger is better when you have 8+ trying to crowd in there at once.
I even upsized to the bottom part of one of those super pet cages which is about 16x24 and I'll put about 3 inches of water in for them. The heavy black rubber water tubs are good too. I always empty the water out after they bathe bc it will quickly become contaminated and they will drink from it even if they have fresh water in their drinkers.
Java and Shadow make such a nice couple.:love It's nice they can enjoy the enrichment of free roaming in your shop since they can't exactly fly.:)

Olive is a star in the house training category no doubt!:bow I have seen my birds are well able to control when and where they poop. Pigeon broody poop is only one example. Some pairs never poop in their nest box, others do. If you look for it you can observe the 'pre-poop' body language right before the event. Pigeons are astute observers of body language - of other birds, animals and humans. I think when Olive pooped on the paper she picked up on subtle signs of approval from you even though you weren't formally training. Just my hypothesis.
