Pigeon Talk

This is a pitiful animal with limited quality of life. It can barely see, probably can't fly as a result, and has enormous flight feathers on its feet that make walking difficult. Birds should not be bred to these harmful extremes.
why are you so against show poultry when you have one yourself? It seems kinda rude when you talk bad about animals that members on this thread keep. I'm not saying that you can't have your own opinion, just try not to hurt people by it. I don't think I would ever want to keep that particular breed, but we all like different types of birds.

Thanks :)

I have a structurally sound breed - and a "low-quality" cull of that breed, regardless -that does not suffer by existing. I am and always will be vocal in protest of domesticated animals bred for defects that reduce quality of life. Such animals should be cared for, but not bred or selected for.

A german owl, particularly a casually bred one that does not fit show standard like my bird, is not comparable to a pigeon which is so heavily feathered it is barely able to function.

When breeding animals, aesthetics and looks should always be secondary to an animals health and well-being, I do not encourage people to raise birds with such extremely exaggerated traits.

I was hoping to do pigeon loft work, but it's 90 and humid today, and for us, that's too hot, lol. Hopefully tomorrow will be a little cooler. If not, I'll probably just muscle through the heat and get it done anyway.

I also had to go to work for an hour to take care of the animals we have boarding, and that was practically right in the middle of the afternoon, and I didn't really want to have to work around that. So, fingers crossed that tomorrow it's cooler and I can get some work done.

just an old towell. I wrapped him in it nice and snug...
Thanks, it's possible 1744 may need the same treatment at some point. For the moment he has 2 small scabs. More concerning he/she is only 130gr versus 230 gr for 1743. He is being fed and did gain 20 gr from yesterday. Seems alert in general so I will wait and see what happens.

Edit - Correction, he gained only 20 gr in 2 days, which is very slow...

Guess what I just found... Mites! On little jake! What would y'all use to get rid of them? A bath with a little borax?

Oh no. He was pretty calm, just get it around everything but the head.

I'm glad your still on! I need your opinion on mites.

I haven't dealt with them personally but I think 20Mule Team borax is a good place to start. Get a deep container and gently submerge all but the head to soak the feathers completely. Regular baths with a couple of spoonfuls of borax will keep them away. If that doesn't take care of it then I'd get a permethryn spray. He's too pretty to have mites!

Ok thanks! I use to do borax in the bath water but I then quit because they drank it.

why don't I submerge the head?
