Pigeon Talk

@mixedUPturk Thanks so much! No vanilla but I can pick some up, does it repel them?
I've heard of those horrible buffalo gnats but I'm not sure these are the same, they seemed most active in the night and in the cooler early morning.
As of this morning everyone seemed fine, even the two 16 day old squabs. I'll be keeping a very vigilant eye on them, though.

Also happy to hear theyre doing good. I was thinkn vanilla is something most people have on hand thats why i asked but if u dont then u might as well buy some permetherin. Buffalo gnats arent active at night tho :/ sounds like it could be a diff culprit. The vanilla would work to repeal them and id go ahead and get the air fresheners too as a backup measure. On your person skin so soft will keep them at bay.

Those things would work for just about any kinda bug too but being active at night is thowing me off. Could u maybe capture some to show us for sure?

How are your squeakers doin btw?
Doin' fine! I put bands on earlier but there still a bit too small. I just tried to get a picture but squeak is settled down for the evening and didn't appreciate my attention! I did get a squeaker butt though!

I'm working until 8 pm Eastern but I've had someone checking on them and no bugs, yet. We'll see what happens at dark. I'll try to catch them tonight but hopefully they wont reappear.

@mixedUPturk At dusk there were a few left but most were stationary on the walls, I only spotted one flying around. I tried to get a picture but they're incredibly small.
I generously applied the extract directly to the feet of all the birds with a cotton ball and gave each one a tiny drop that I smeared on their neck feathers to protect their faces. Thankfully this didn't make them sticky and they seem completely unbothered. I wiped some surfaces, mainly their roosting areas, with a damp towel with extract then hung the same towel over the mesh.
I'll be checking periodically. I give them Ivermectin drops monthly to keep lice and mites away, would this also kill any gnats or other flying bugs that bit them?

Another quick update.

Its now dark and there are definitely some more flying around. Apparently, whatever these things are the vanilla doesn't work on them because I saw several crawl from the treated roost onto a treated toe before being shaken off.
At least there are less of them tonight, so far, and they seem to be dealing with them a lot better. (feet tucked in and covered) I'll have to try some stronger chemicals against them tomorrow. :barnie
