Pigeon Talk

Another quick update.

Its now dark and there are definitely some more flying around. Apparently, whatever these things are the vanilla doesn't work on them because I saw several crawl from the treated roost onto a treated toe before being shaken off.
At least there are less of them tonight, so far, and they seem to be dealing with them a lot better. (feet tucked in and covered) I'll have to try some stronger chemicals against them tomorrow. :barnie

Man im sorry those dont show well enough for me to identify is there a macro setting on ur phone? But for them to be out after dark and not reacting to vanilla extract theyre not the buffalo gnats. Better post a new thread in the preds and pests section. Permetherin works on a whole slew of pests id still try it.

The coop is mine!

Now the cleaning begins...

I'm going to post one tomorrow I think- I'm exhausted. I did go out to set up a fan but found that there were very few of the gnats, only one or two here and there, and they weren't bothering the birds and just flying around. I think maybe the vanilla extract might have worked and repelled them after all. I stood by their coop for a good 10 minutes in the dark and didn't hear any stomping or anything and couldn't see any harassing or landing on them. I left the fan off for now because I want to gauge if they're actually going away on their own or not.
Whether I drove them off or they simply died or moved on, there are significantly less gnats tonight. There were hundreds last night. The vanilla is certainly keeping the mosquitoes away from them, though.

Scare me? :lau nah i dont scare easy :lau

The meat thing ive heard about before and the flying things. i jus dont see them able to do me any good. I got enough pets, the birds all work for eggs and meat. My understanding is that pigeons dont lay enough to give me much meat they hatch like every three months if ur pushin em? They sit each time theyve laid 2 eggs? Yes they raise their young ynlike quail but quail chicks hatch fulla the spunk to take care of themselves as long as the means to do so are provided. Then they need more cage space upwards, and my quail can lay every day and the eggs i incubate are grown adults an freezer ready at 6wks... i can imagine theyre really neat to let em fly and yes thats much different than the poultry i fool with but if i got another pet id wanna get a puppy to raise w my children and train to protect the birds. Or another cat to hunt the mice. But my DH is not onboard with those either. I made plans to get 44 pekin duck eggs from my uncle and when DH heard about that he was already mad

So glad you got a handle on the gnats. That’s a lot of bird loss very quickly. Small consolation, you educated lots of folks that never knew it could happen!
Honestly, even the enabler in me can see why pigeons wouldn’t be for you, unless you just want some pretty ones to enjoy watching. I do love to watch them fly around, even though I keep mine penned.

Not sure if I mentioned, I got a couple kittens I’m hoping will be good mousers. DH has always hated cats (although all cats love him!) but he finally let me get a couple. 2 males, so I don’t have to mess with them having more or going into heat. They are living in my woodshop till I can get them used to all the birds.

I'm not big into cats but they do look cute! I'd be paranoid with having the pigeons but hopefully they'll get used to them and learn they're not food!

They won’t be able to get to the pigeons. I’ve had a bad mole problem this year, never had them before. Small mouse-size things. I hope the cats can get rid of them.
So far, they’ve been scared of the chickens. :p
