I'm going to post one tomorrow I think- I'm exhausted. I did go out to set up a fan but found that there were very few of the gnats, only one or two here and there, and they weren't bothering the birds and just flying around. I think maybe the vanilla extract might have worked and repelled them after all. I stood by their coop for a good 10 minutes in the dark and didn't hear any stomping or anything and couldn't see any harassing or landing on them. I left the fan off for now because I want to gauge if they're actually going away on their own or not.
Whether I drove them off or they simply died or moved on, there are significantly less gnats tonight. There were hundreds last night. The vanilla is certainly keeping the mosquitoes away from them, though.

Your pic doesnt show. Ill still be here please do get your rest. Glad to hear the numbers are lessened i hope its for good!
So glad you got a handle on the gnats. That’s a lot of bird loss very quickly. Small consolation, you educated lots of folks that never knew it could happen!
Honestly, even the enabler in me can see why pigeons wouldn’t be for you, unless you just want some pretty ones to enjoy watching. I do love to watch them fly around, even though I keep mine penned.
Not sure if I mentioned, I got a couple kittens I’m hoping will be good mousers. DH has always hated cats (although all cats love him!) but he finally let me get a couple. 2 males, so I don’t have to mess with them having more or going into heat. They are living in my woodshop till I can get them used to all the birds.

Thanks! Im glad to have been able to help and still cant believe how little i found on there about them prior to my issues.
let that go out to all of you theres a reason im not interested in them this friend of 5 years sees theyre jus not for me. I take my poultry farming pretty seriously and i dont have many pets. My livestock are expected to pay for themselves, put meat and eggs on my table and look great while they do it
i have done the research to make all that work for me at once, 3 times over
with the best lines, best guidance from here (
Nat) and the best tabletop incubators-- plus waited on the opportunities to get the birds on hookups at great prices... i have Foleys BLRW 1st generation, and Svart Hona and James Marie Quail directly from him
Kitties are too cute! U should try again to send me those pics from last wk! U did mention getting them and i figured theyre for the mole problem, glad he let you and i hope they do a great job
I'm not big into cats but they do look cute! I'd be paranoid with having the pigeons but hopefully they'll get used to them and learn they're not food!
i have two outdoor cats, one has brought us two Rabbits! They know better than to fool w my birds but like leave em alone in a quail cage or a brood pen i probly wouldnt have any live birds left. They won’t be able to get to the pigeons. I’ve had a bad mole problem this year, never had them before. Small mouse-size things. I hope the cats can get rid of them.
So far, they’ve been scared of the chickens.![]()
Very good thats a great start being scared of full grown hens
im willing to bet theyre great for you But unfixed males tend to wander off for a wk at a time so id get em fixed to make em homebodies and keep em from spraying You
atho spraying might be good for keeping the rodents away.

! Good excuse for strawberries and cream though
!
