Olive is amazing! How does she get past the curtain, under it? Did she transition to her cage potty before or after you removed the paper by the door?My bird has won the battle of wills and now has the run of the entire house when I let her out. Once she learned she could pass through the curtain in the hallway, it was a losing battle keeping her from doing so. So she spends lots of time in the kitchen now, and she has also developed a fondness for exploring the basement, even though it is dreary and she has to go down a tight, poorly lit stairwell which turns twice to get there (she doesn't fly, rather hops down every step.) The first time she seemed to not know how to get back and I found her sitting up on a rafter. She has since learned how to come back up on her own.
My biggest concern with her flying in rooms where she is not directly supervised was, she would probably leave messes on all the furniture she lands on, but haven't found a single poop in any of these rooms she now has free reign of. I took the newspaper away from under the door in the front room, and now line her cage with the paper (I used to use fleece, but it wore out after so many washes.) She has now transitioned to going into her cage to do her business quite reliably (but never on her shelf by her bed) and will fly across three rooms to do so.
Oh wow!Seems that my bird of prey issues won't end.
I've been seeing this peregrine falcon daily for a while and today he finally took a shot at my lone young bird. He was flying tight circles in the yard as per usual when the falcon, which was several hundred feet up, suddenly stooped and came barreling down out of the sky. Fortunately in a stroke of luck Mr. Frodo was already coming in for a landing on the loft and I think once the falcon saw me and the tight quarters it had to work with it decided against it, circled around a bit, then left.
My birds haven't had much intetest in flying anywhere besides the perimeter of my yard for ages now and I think surely if one of mine had been in the open sky the peregrine would have won.
We hide!I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow if it cools down a bit. Don't feel like standing out there too long in this hot humid weather ( I don't know how the people in the south deal with this)

Being in such a wet area is what made this happen and is what makes the heat indexes so high

Good to see your keeping steady numbers! I like the lil bantys. Mine are so funny! The coop looks great. If you put a solid floor on the run side you could raise the whole lot up on legs so it isn't too low and it would make a brilliant loft!Oh wow!
Im glad Frodo made it in safe!
We hide!
Nice to meet ya! Glad you stopped in to join us!
Again!
That thing is huge!
Beautiful birds!
They grow so fast!
I took a few hens to a friends dad yesterday and he sent a bantam Cochin and his hen home with me.. said he just doesn't do bantams well and hated to seperate the lil guy from his gf, she is a standard but no idea what kind. So I brought em home.
We will be going back to his place Fri or Sat to pick up an older prefab coop that he's giving me too! It'll fit just right in the back porch area if I need to bring the pigeons up from the aviary in winter..
Nees some TLC but is structurally sound.. Im excited to get it home and fixed up!

Well, I took 5 hens and only brought back the 2 birds so it still counts for downsizing..right?Good to see your keeping steady numbers! I like the lil bantys. Mine are so funny! The coop looks great. Fantails are cool, I'd like to have at least one eventually.has fantails (showed me some pics on her phone) she fell in love with my pigeons. She said she might want some when I get around to selling some. (Or we might trade some)![]()
I had that happen yesterday! I just took the egg out hopefully she'll not lay in there again! There's enough bowls!Fantails are cool, I'd like to have at least one eventually.
Today I went out to to find the hen sitting on a new egg in the old nest bowl with her two 3+ week old squabs squashed in on top of her. Guess its time to finally order some fake eggs lol
