Pigeon Talk

Alright. Let me know if you bring home a feathered friend. :)

I brought home three! :idunno

They're not companion birds but just-to-watch ones though... A pair of button quails which are soooo cute and only as big as chicken eggs. And a beautiful white canary... Too young to know the sex yet.

I have to set up their cages yet - but right now they're doing well together in the travel cage and I may keep them together.

The quails are Grover and Annie.

I'm thinking Holly for the canary because I'm getting a female vibe but not sure about that yet.

I have buttons theyre so fun! Will you keep them together?

Very nice! What is that your using as the buttons bedding? Theyd sure appreciate a place to dust bathe.
Timothy hay over newsprint. Ill give them a dish of sand every so often but leaving it in the cage all day will be too messy. What's a good sand to use? Play sand or like chinchilla dust? I even read someone online uses diatomaceous earth like is used to keep away ants.. I have a lot of that but its so fine I'd worry about them inhaling it.

Your right the DE could be inhaled and cause issues. I use river bank sand because thats what i was able to find free but i add jus a bit of DE to make sure no mites come from it. I use about 50:50 soil and sand too. The potting soil had to be organic but they love the dampness. I dont have any experience with chinchillas dust but i think its really fine and likely to fly too?

Did they give you the color names and sexes of them?

Thanks! Ill try a few things.

No they didnt tell me anything. I picked them out of a cage of about 60 quails. I knew what to look for and made sure there's one of each sex though while picking two of the liveliest ones that weren't plucked. The male is young and not molted fully into adult plumage.

I think he's wild type and she is cinnamon.
