Pigeon Talk

Thanks! Ill try a few things.

No they didnt tell me anything. I picked them out of a cage of about 60 quails. I knew what to look for and made sure there's one of each sex though while picking two of the liveliest ones that weren't plucked. The male is young and not molted fully into adult plumage.

I think he's wild type and she is cinnamon.
Are you keeping the quail inside? You'll know about it when he starts crowing!

These guys were pretty much impulse buys but I love them. They're quite calm and come up to the front of the cage. They're tucking into a dish if greens and boiled egg. Probably the first fresh food they've ever eaten.

I've tried to replucate a little forest floor setting for them and they seem to love it. They're by the window and were laying in a spot of sun preening each other earlier so it looks like they've bonded.

These guys are the closest I can get to chickens in the city!

I'm back from New York City! I had a good time. It was a but rushed because I was only going down for an overnight to see my aunt and do Comic Con on Sunday. But I did get to the American National History Museum. For about three hours because apparently even in the city that never sleeps, the museums still close at 6  So I didn't get to see it all and I'll have to go back.

I did see this guy though. Theodore Roosevelt donated it to the museum.

Along with lots and lots of feral pigeons too. They have quite the variety in their ferals.

Quail are so fun! i really really love my quail. Have you considered keeping coturnix Mr @Serin ? Theyre great :love also they rival chickens in the laying department but with healthier eggs.

They dont even come close to rivaling a parrots noise. They dont crow like cots either- its a low pitched almost growl. The hen calls are slightly louder but even at the loudest it can barely be heard from one end of the house to the other through open doors.

The coturnix at the feed store were very loud with their crowing or whatever it is... They don't interest me as house pets, theres no room outside and I have enough critters at the moment.

I got these buttons because I figured they wouldn't be any more work than finches which I have a bunch of as it is. Coturnix are bigger and getting closer to proper poultry size!

Since weve entirely derailed the pigeon thread into buttons  i may as well add that i keep my buttons in a reptile tank. The lid is all screen so i feel well enough that theyre getting proper air flow. This majorly keeps the dander and dust bath stuff from being a mess which is extra important to me with my three toddlers. It offers a great veiw too! They will really use every sq inch of floor space they can get as theyre very active little buggars and id like to give them a '40 gal breeder' reptile tank as that has the biggest footprint but is kind of shallow. Be careful Mr @Serin theyll boink their heads on the top of the enclosure, and if its a hard enough impact they can break their necks in a strong flush. Thats one reason people say to provide short cages, theyre also less stressed in them.

Thanks for the info. I clipped their wings when I got them so they can't do much boinking. Though they can still jump pretty high.
