Does anyone else who has an aviary with a dirt floor like mine use something else for the floor?
It's been raining for the past seven days and while the roof does a good job keeping the rain out its been coming in from the sides and soaking the floor. The soil the aviary is built on basically consists of years of decayed pine needles that mix with the dust. The birds have been tracking the mud and debris everywhere. No puddles inside, though!

I have a couple pens that get wet around the edges, and used to have one that let water flow in. I added some river rock and more dirt on top, to raise it higher than the flow. When they get wet around the edges from blowing rain, I may toss in some dry pine shavings or dry leaves, or straw. Usually that gives them enough to walk on top of, until the ground dries again.

I would add either pavers: and wash them with the water house every few days. or river rock, like WV suggested.

One side of mine was getting rained in so I bought a 2x2m clear tarp and attached it too that side. Dry as a bone in there now! I also fitted guttering along the front to sop the water soaking the front and trap.

A few inches of regular gravel has worked very well to keep mine drained and I DO get lots of water flowing thru from uphill when it rains. After a year I see I need to add more. Amazing how they kick it around a it somehow disappears. Overall I'm happy with it.
Edit I have a layer of landscape cloth over the soil and under the gravel.
