Here are two of my other homers. Idk what you guys use for nesting boxes but we built 2 when I got the rollers and then put 4 of these metal chicken boxes in the loft until I build more. The one place I got birds from was using milk crates so I'm assuming these will be fine. View attachment 2310810

I got 4 like this from the guy and he told me to put them in a tiny cage for a few days and they will pair up. Its been 3 days and I dont see much affection going on between them, I think they may both be guys.

The black and black saddle are stunning!
The Satinettes appear to be a pair to me, just from that pic, if they are close to the same age. The males tend to get a little beefier, fatter, in my experience. And the females just seem to have a very feminine look to them. Pretty birds!

haha. sorry!

yes, shes home. she got hit by the hawk i think, but she will heal up fine.

in a way, i hope this hawk sticks around and is terrottorial. so when they all migrate, he keeps the rest out. he is very inexperienced, so 1 out of 4 attacks have been succusful so far, and the birds are wising up.. so if that happens, i may be able to fly my birds a little during hawk season.

TBH, not sure if either would be the best match for your saddle.

Did a little resaerch. I read that the saddle is a single gene, which is good news for you. SO, you may be able to pair it with a cock, preferably one without the spread gene and breed them. Then take a baby and breed it back tho it's mother. This should give you the saddle look. But, I'm not a fan of inbreeding at all, but it's up to you. if you breed one with the spread gene, it can take two more breedings after that to produce saddles. Again, this is just with a little research.

I also read that the saddle gene was introduced early in a lot of racing lines, so it's still floating around in some birds. I wonder if I can try to perfect anything through this bird?

I traded 3 pigeons today for some guinea hatching eggs. But as I was catching the pigeons, I noticed some feather mites. Or at least what I think is feather mites. So tomorrow is major clean out day, and treating everything I can. But should I treat with ivermectin or permethrin?

p.s. (I told the fella beforehand that I had to back out of the trade, and he said he had just bought ivermectin because he had gotten some birds from another lady and they had mites too, so he didn’t mind taking my birds, knowing they needed to be treated, since he was planning to treat all of his anyway)

I like permethrin. it isnt as harsh of a treatment, and if the birds eat something with some, its no big deal. it wouldnt be a big deal if they ate ivermetin, but i have more experience with permethrin.

Once you have them, never expect to get rid of them.... i have had them for two years. i treat the loft and birds everytime i clean out the loft, but still have them. I just keep them in a managable number... they are tought to get rid of, so good luck.
