Pigeon Talk

:lau

She isn’t quite so violent now. :D That was probably her first hatch. I just wanted her to know I wasn’t going to hurt them. And I may have just been trying to video that for reference.

I usually band legs around day 10. By then, they are much more calm too.

My latest failed experiment:
I discovered a nest on the ground the other day, up under the coop. I decided to try to give her a bowl, so I added one of those nesting pads to the bottom, a couple leaves, with some nearby, moved the eggs into it, and put the bowl back on the ground where she had the eggs. She inspected it for a while, I even saw her get on the edge of the bowl. But apparently she didn’t like it and never sat on the eggs again. I finally removed the bowl and the eggs hadn’t developed anyway, so either I was too quick, or they just weren’t fertile. I’m not sure how long she had been under there.
They seem to be very fussy about their nests and dislike any interference/change. I have found ducks to be the same way.

Thank you! Will you be getting Kormorns soon? I have a old red one, he doesn't really like to fly. He's happy just to sit in the nest box with the German Owl.
I was doing more research and found out the pic is of a Kormorn relative, the Felegayhzer Tumbler. They are a bit smaller and more slight than the Kormorns. I love them. Look at this face!

I will finish my chicken coop rebuild and get the new bantams this summer, but I think I'll make the effort to go to the Great Western Pigeon Show in December. It is a bit of a drive, but I like to visit Santa Cruz. I looked up their past entries and there were quite a lot of Kormorns and a few Felegayzhers, so maybe I can make connections and learn about them.

What are the space requirement of a pair of such Tumblers? My backyard is kinda small but the weather is great all year and I would want to give them a generous flight cage. Are tumblers of this type typically let out to fly, or are they strictly show/cage birds?

He's much prettier than a Kormorn! He looks like my Kormorn cross. I think pigeons need something like five square feet per bird, but I don't know. Honestly, my Kormorn would be happy living in just his nest box, which is only about one square foot. I bet they could just live with your bantams. Whenever I let my pigeons out, on the rare occasion that he finds the door, he'll fly around. When he's out he usually just goes from the pigeon pen to the chicken coop and back. And when He's tired, I have to catch him and put him back because he's too dum too find the door.

Kiwi was killed by a Coopers hawk this weekend while I was doing yard work. I was crossing the yard and I spotted a flash of white on the ground, and when I went closer I realized that there was a hawk standing over her. The hawk took off with Kiwi in its talons but couldn't carry her far as Kiwi was about the same size and dropped her before flying over the fence. Kiwi was already dead so I left her there and the hawk has been coming around to eat her the past few days. Kiwi's new mate flew away as well, I guess spooked by the hawk and hasn't returned. I'm hoping that since the pigeons are the only ones I let out the hawk will leave to find better places to hunt and leave my chicks alone, but now all my pigeons are gone :(.

I'm so sorry for your loss :(:(

Two of my nests each had one squab the 31st and each had a second on the 1st! Here is a pic of one nest, the other is my red grizzle which I got some great colors out of last year so cant wait to see what they produce
