pineapple for chickens

In pastry circles, pineapple is one of the 7 deadly fruit, which contains an enzyme that breaks down protein, which is why it's difficult to use with gelatin. Anyways, when I used to work in restaurants, whenever I worked with pineapple for an extended period, I could actually feel it eating away at my skin. I'd be careful giving it to chickens, especially young ones.

Many acidic fruits Papaya for example help break down protein, not sure it is related in any way to it being good or bad to eat. I have eaten a lot at one sitting with no ill effect. Cant imagine a chicken being hurt by it.

Add kiwi to the list of fruits with helpful enzymes to break down proteins. If anything, these are digestive aids which should help food absorption. I'm not sure if chickens need something like that, but I figure anything in moderation...

I was questioning giving it to my chickens and found a site that said it made several of her chickens dehydrated and some died.

I've heard that excessive fruit can make hens stop laying for several weeks, but how true that is I cannot say. Tomatoes (technically a fruit, after all) and pumpkins never seemed to cause problems for my girls, although I think it was just two or three of the 25 hens I had at the time that actually ate the pumpkin I gave them.
By excessive fruit, they mean so much fruit that they're not getting the protein/nutrients they need. They're mostly talking about commercial places feeding only wasted fruit to birds - truckloads at a time.

People need to not worry so much.

I just walked outside eating a pineapple spear and my 3-mo. pullets and two hens rushed up to beg some from me. I gave them a few bites and they went crazy for it! Then I thought I should check to see if it is okay for them to eat and found this thread.

My hens are very spoiled and picky about what they will eat. They turn up their beaks at lots of things but they loved the pineapple. Are there any more thoughts about whether this is okay for them to eat?

They are also obsessed with cheese. They will run each other down to steal a piece of cheese. I assume that is okay for them...

Just F.Y.I. - I've heard that okra is a dangerous veggie for any bird, because of it's slimy consistency. The birds supposedly have a tough time swallowing it and can choke...

i have recently started keeping a "hen bucket" for the birds (chickens roosters turkey a keet and some quail) and have just been chucking general food waste in the bucket (no meat) bread cakes fruit peelings ect. and we were chopping up a couple of pinapple last night and threw the scraps in the bucket. thought I had better check if it was ok for them and came across this thread. it's been really usefull, I automatically threw out the onion skins in the bin but I recently read it's quite good for them is tis true?
