I purchased a bag of Purina layer pellets and found pinto beans in with the pellets. I would estimate a bean or two per pound of pellets. Aren't dry beans toxic to chickens? Are they ok in this small of quantities? I emailed Purina on Monday, but have not received a reply.

No. It is not okay. Dry legumes are not to be fed to chickens. That feed is contaminated and they should replace the bag.

A couple years ago, I had a contaminated bag of Purina feed and I called them. They asked for me to e-mail them photos of the compromised bag and the contaminated contents. I did so, and they sent me a coupon for the full purchase price of a new bag of Flock Raiser.

If you soak dried beans till they are completely swollen, I wouldn't think it would hurt them. But if they eat them dry and then the beans begin to swell inside the bird it may lead to a herniated crop. BOOM! Or more than likely just a slow tearing of the crop and then internal leakage of the crop contents. I don't think just a couple beans per pound would hurt (most chickens wouldn't eat a whole pound in a feeding), but if a greedy bird wolfed down a bunch of dried beans, it might be the last thing they ever eat. :hit
