So today, they had no feed, i give them some every morning, the night before, they ate like animals and i thought oh, they're just hungry. When i gave them their food this morning, they started to eat and they started shaking their heads and one of them made a pip noise then 2 more started it. I haven't given them grit for 3 weeks now..... i think that was the problem but i just came here to check. The hens that did that their noses aren't runny. One of them opened her mouth and a little water or spit came out. I thought nothing of it but she didn't drink before that.I can't keep her somewhere else away from the flock because its a flock wide problem.

Also, this morning i saw blood on the shavings, i found out what it was, a hen had lost her nail on her toe, should i be worried about this or treat it or something.

Thank you guys for the help.

my chickens make that noise a lot, I think it is if there mouths are dry? it is probably nothing to worry about tho because mine have made that noise for as long as I can remember.

but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will help u soon:D

funny that you posted this now, I was just thinking about how they make that noise today!

Do you only feed one time a day?
What do you feed?

Make the poultry grit (crushed granite) available free choice, just place it in cup or scatter it in the run.

From your description, it sounds like they may have a crop problem. Very unusual for several to have crop issues at the same time. Check each chicken and tell us what the crop feels like.

I was thinking the pip noise was perhaps a sneeze. If they are not showing any other symptoms of respiratory disease, it could just be dust or ammonia build up. Obviously the fluid reflux is another matter and may be a crop issue. Can you check her crop first thing in the morning before she has chance to eat and make sure it is empty. If it is not, then you probably have a crop problem to deal with.

I feed them Kamlbatch layer feed. I have given them grit and the noise has dissapeared!
