Pipd's Peeps!

Pics
You did a great job on Tillys crest she looks like she just walked out of the beauty shop. What kind of a chicken is she? I don't think I've seen her before. Wynne has got that Derpish stare into space.

Oops, I did forget to add that, didn't I? Tilly is a Swedish Flower Hen. I don't post pictures of her too often because she's reclusive and often in motion when she's out and about. I think the last picture I posted of her was at the bottom of a pile of hens in a nest back in February.

Now that I'm looking, though, I believe those pictures are actually from over a year ago!

I also have this picture that I never posted from May 19. She, Maggie, and Skua were having a dust bath in a patch of sand I dug up right inside the chicken yard gate. But you can see in this pic how big her crest had gotten before her 'hair cut' the other day.

She didn't look to happy in that nesting box. I don't know why they all want to use the same box it never fails.

Yes her crest is pretty long in that pic. I need to trim up my polish hen's crest so she can see better. Thanks for the pics of her.

Well, yesterday, the babies turned 3 weeks old! I was 100% committed that that would be the day they'd go outside the first time, but the weather had other ideas. SIGH. So I thought, well, I wouldn't take pictures then and instead take pictures today, because today they would FOR SURE go outside! But, nope, once again the weather didn't work with me. Tomorrow, it's supposed to be sunny and clear, so fingers crossed that that will be the big day!

For now, I took a ton of pictures today! Like, seriously, a ton!! I took individual pictures of all the babies to make up for missing their 3-week day yesterday, and then I sat there in the brooder for a while and just snapped pics when I saw something cute. :D So brace yourselves--this post is gonna be long!!

Individual pictures, in alphabetical order:

Callette the Silver Gray Dorking:

1000

Cazzie the Blue Cochin:

1000

Donnie the SGD:

1000

Endymion the Easter-egger:

1000

Flury the Splash Cochin:

1000

Izzy the Blue Ameraucana:

1000

Lydda the SGD:

1000

Rooska the Lavender Orpington:

1000

And Umru the Light Brahma (eating, because that's what she does  ) :

1000

Now, for the rest of the pictures...

Callette and Donnie on my lap :love

1000

Rooska being fabulous :love

1000

Cazzie and her floofy feet!

1000

Izzy, taking her role as parrot seriously. Yep, she's on my shoulder.

1000

Umru hugs! Those aren't too common, you know. :p

1000

"Derp?"

1000

Donnie boy in my lap :love

1000

He's listening very closely :love

1000

Umru eating again.

1000

Endy on my leg. "What?"

1000

She's probably giving me looks because she spent the entire time I was up there hopping on my arms while I was trying to take pictures. Chick nails scratching up and down your arms don't make picture taking terribly easy! Does she look ashamed?

1000

Here's Flury, scratching. She can get those shavings flying!!

1000

She takes preening very seriously.

1000

Here is a better picture of her splashes, by the way. Part of her tail is coming in in blue. :D

1000

This is an outtake from Roska's picture, where Lydda decided she wanted to be in it, too.

1000

And to finish off, Dorking love!! :love Need I explain why I adore this breed?

1000

Oh, Callette :love

1000

Lydda, my little buddy :love

1000

These next two pictures were at the same time. Callette made herself at home under my left arm:

1000

And Lydda snuggled up in my right arm:

1000

Rooska joined in, too. :love Such a sweetheart!

1000

Rooska and Callette with their necks stretched out over my arm. :love :love

1000

"Um, excuse us!"

1000

Donnie tried to join in, but Callette wasn't having any of it! "No boys allowed!"

1000

And, err, there you have it! Told ya it was a lot!!

Lots of great pics. They are growing so much. I think Rooska and Izzy are having a race to see who gets their tail first. Poor Umru no feathers and always hungry.

The dorking darlings look like sweethearts. Always wanting held.

I hope the weather is nice for them to go outside. That's going to be a big day for them to see the great outdoors. Thanks so much for sharing their pics with us. Have a great evening.

We went outside today! Yay!! :weee The sun was shining and the ground wasn't too damp, so out they went for the first time! And they did wonderfully!

At first, I opened the box and no one was interested at all! (They were all panting because they heated up that box so much just on the trip from my room to this little pen--poor babies were cooking in there!)

1000

Izzy hopped up eagerly to get out of the box, but once she realized something was different, she kind of changed her mind.

1000

To try and encourage them, I grabbed Callette and moved her to my lap. This, clearly, was a horrifying move.

1000

So, instead, I tipped the box over and dumped the babies out! Once they were in the grass, they warmed up to it faster than any of my previous babies!

1000

Flury was the only one that flatly refused. "Nah, I think I'll stay in here..." She did eventually come out, though.

1000

Meanwhile, Callette was getting adventurous in the grass!

1000

Rooska felt the sun on her feathers and -PLOP- it was time for her first sun bath! :D

1000

She looked fairly content, though the sun was awfully bright in her eyes...

1000

Endymion decided that the shavings in the box should go in the grass instead, and began kicking them out, naughty baby! "Who, me?"

1000

Then a car went by and she and Cazzie had to stretch their necks out to make sure that scary thing was gone!

1000

Lydda soon discovered sun bathing.

1000

Cazzie moved out into the grass.

1000

And Umru? She thought grass was a good dust bathing substrate. Maybe some day they'll figure out this whole dust bathing thing.

After that, I put my camera aside and went to get Crash. Yep, she met the babies! And she was totally unimpressed. She spent some time out in the grass pretending I and the chicks didn't exist. Then, she got angry at me for moving her closer to the babies' pen meet them. Then, she went into her cat carrier and moped for the rest of the time we were out there. Oh, well. She'll get used to them eventually--I hope!

Sweet pics it looked like they really enjoyed their little outting. Crash had to be a party pooper and go in her carrier. She was probably jealous of them climbing on you. She doesn't want to share you with any chicks.

I like the way Umru plopped down to take her sunbath. She is so energetic.

The car pic was to funny. Everything is so new and different to them.

Thanks so much for sharing their outting with us. I really enjoyed all the pics. Have a great day and give Crash a hug for me.

There was this thing a while back I guess, some body told me,it was a chicken book, and she made a new one:chickenbook(a "facebook"type chat thread for you chickens!)

Yay! :weee They are so fuzzy and small!! :love Just wait, they'll be big, feathery critters in no time! :D I'll go check out your thread.

Oh, and Raven approves the name Raven for your little Wyandotte. My Raven is gold-laced instead of silver, but believes that her name is befitting of noble Wyandottes of any color. :p

My babies are doing great, too. Went outside with them again today, but it was so hot and humid that I couldn't stand to stay out too long. They were panting, I was sweating, and we were all miserable! :barnie But Crashie came closer to the fence and checked the babies out more! Progress! Hopefully soon I'll be able to introduce them without the fence.

Crashie is also now sleeping upstairs in my room with the brooder, in her own little pen of course. Last night, the first night, she was a bit restless, but she has been quiet tonight. I think covering her pen has helped, because she can't really tell that it's different than where she's been all along--thanks, Pattyhen, for that idea! :) Another bonus, now that her pen is out of the way, she can have baths in the big tub whenever she needs to! The only downfall is that this morning, she was quack-quack-QUACKing away and woke me up early! :rant

The big girls are doing great, too, but this heat is taking it's toll on them. I've gotten a few fewer eggs the past few days from them. Not that they're here for the eggs, just something I noticed. Looks like Margie is out of the Broody Brigade, and Ihi has followed suit. I had to jail Elly for brooding for one day, but she seems good now. Now it looks like the Lady Wyandotte is going broody. SIGH, it never ends! But, oh, well. Broody jail for her tomorrow, which will hopefully reform her.

Oh, and one last thing I keep forgetting to post! The Silkie fuzzies are already perching on their own!! :yesss: It only took a few nights before they started going to the perches on their own. I found Indi on the nests a couple times (roosting, at least, just not in the right spot!), and the other night Ben and Winter decided to huddle in the corner, but otherwise, they've been roosting! :D
