Pipd's Peeps!

Pics
I see they had a moms not home so let's party.  The little stinkers I bet they had a blast while it lasted.  :D

It doesn't seem possible they are 6 weeks old already.  They are beautiful chicks except for poor Umru but she is coming along with her feathers.  I love the little legs on the dorkings.  Do you have a leader yet?  The dare devil of them all and the instagater.

Thanks so much for sharing their pics with us I really enjoy watching them grow.

Have a great day.

None of them really fit the bill for that, but the closest is Endymion. She's the one that always hops out if I move the cover on the brooder and turn away for a second, or heck, she even flies up into the cover sometimes like she's trying to knock it out of the way. She's always up for exploring new things and she does seem to lead the way a lot, though not always. Callette was up on the shelf above their brooder the other day, so it's not just Dymi that's adventurous. I think the two Dorking gals are quite adventurous together, though they are more tame when they've split off away from one another. Izzy is the energy, energy, ENERGY one, always flapping and flying and trying to get to new heights, so sometimes it's her that gives the other chicks new ideas. Umru is always stomping around and stepping on the others, not a whole lot of leading there. Donnie and Rooska are both very laid back and calm, and the two Cochins are a little bit more energetic than them, but nothing anywhere near what Izzy is! Put them all together, especially when they've just been let out of the box into their spacious outside pen, and it gets kinda crazy with chicks running and flapping and flying and avoiding being landed on.

Well, surprise! Mom and I were out this morning enjoying some chicken time when a strangled peeping noise came from the chicks' pen (and scared the poop out of the poor Silkie fuzzies that were over there watching them  ).

Donnie's already crowing!

I tried to catch it on video, but he clammed up by the time I had my phone out to record him! I'll keep trying. It was pretty cute. :love

,he is!cool!

It sounds like they all have their own little personalities. That is so cute the way you described them.

I would love to hear Donnie crowing if you can catch him. I bet the other chicks were scared when they heard that awful noise.

Have a great day and enjoy the little ones.

Took me a couple days to catch him in the act, but here it is! :D My little man crowing already!

And as a bonus, here is Crash in the bath yesterday! I totally forgot to post these after I uploaded them. This one shows the Crashie Rocket about 14 seconds in. :D

This one shows her little 'metal detector' thing, which is what I call it when she walks around in the tub with her beak to the ground sweeping it back and forth. I usually don't have the faucet going when she's doing it, so at the end, she got mad at the water for getting in her way. This one might be LOUD because of the faucet, so keep your volume in mind before you hit play!

Donnie take a bow you did great. A few more err err's and you have it down pat.

I think Crash is faster then a rocket.

Thats cute how she takes her head back and forth like that in the tub. Take her to the beach I bet she would find all kinds of treasures.

Thanks for posting the videos I really enjoyed them. Have a great day.

Well, I don't know what he did, but Ben has hurt himself somehow. I've been noticing that his ear lobe on one side looked a little iffy, but it appeared to be healing fine, so I left him alone. Last night, I went to move him from where he had perched to an appropriate perching spot, and he panicked and grabbed himself in the face with his foot like the brilliant little chicken he is. I noticed a couple drops of blood on the perch afterwards and figured he reinjured his ear lobe. This morning, however, I caught him because he was getting after his mom (hormones, you know  ) and found that he has a pretty sizable raw spot on his neck / throat, somewhere between the size of a dime and a nickel I think? I don't know if he tore himself open that badly last night, or if I've just not been paying enough attention and he's had this gaping wound all along. :/ I suspect that it started as a wound from him and Winter duking it out and just kept getting worse until his brilliant stunt last night, but I can't help but feel bad for not paying more attention to it when I noticed his ear lobe was iffy. I have him in a pen where he can see the flock but not get into fights with his brother (it's up on legs so they can't even really fight through the fence), and I'll be fixing him up as best I can. He's fine otherwise and keeping up his tough guy facade, but I can tell he doesn't feel good from it because he hasn't crowed at all this morning. :(

Oh no poor Ben I hope he gets better real soon. Its no telling how he injured hisself. It's hard to do a spot check everyday I know. Give him a huggie from me and I hope he gets to crowing again real soon.

He's looking a lot better already. He had to have reopened it that night, because by the end of the day yesterday it looked much better. He almost did the same stupid thing this morning, too, when I caught him to pen him again. Do they make cone collars for chickens?

Now I'm keeping an eye on a piece of skin he has around that wound that's just kind of hanging there, which hopefully won't cause problems as it heals, but we'll see. Either he or Winter was crowing this morning with Reuben, and again just now. I can't tell the two apart by voice anymore, so I don't know which it was, but it could be a good sign. Anyway, here's hoping he keeps going and heals nicely.

Meanwhile, looks like the Broody Brigade has gone into hiding again, but there certainly is an underground effort going to build up their forces again.

Oh, and the babies are outside all day every day now, and having a blast with their pen! I've been debating whether I want to leave them out overnight for the first time this week or wait until they're 8 weeks old like I usually do with my chicks. They do seem awfully bored in the morning while waiting to go outside... But I wonder if they are ready for the overnight temps, especially our awkward little Umru. And I definitely don't want one of their first nights outside to be tomorrow night! We'll see what happens.

I'm glad Ben is doing better. I hope that was him crowing thats a good sign.

Your going to have empty nest syndrome when the chicks go outside for good. Umru needs a sweater if the temps get to chilly. I had no idea that breed of chicken took so long to feather. I can't spell the name of the kind of chicken she is.

I think she is going to be the ugly duckling that turns out to be a swan.

We've had rain most of the day and then I think they have predicted more rain for tomorrow. It seems like it always rains on the fourth of July. They will just reshedule the fireworks if it rains.

Have a nice 4th of July and hug the babies for me.
