Pipd's Peeps!

Silky ducks are considered bantams, but with normal proportions to their bill and neck, so I would not expect them to have the same issues as calls. They came from a mutation out of regular mallards. My understanding is that either the gene that causes silkied feathering in ducks or one linked to that gene causes their eggshells and membranes to thicken slightly as well, and that's why they struggle with hatching.

Crash, she's one of my birds whose name has a bit of a story behind it. When she was just an egg, I was candling just before lock down and she slipped out of my hand and went CRASH! onto the table and off to the floor. Thankfully, this was just my bedside table, so it wasn't much of a fall, but still enough that her egg was mostly crushed down one side. My dad and I carefully put candle wax over the cracks and hoped for the best. A few days later, Crash arrived, the only of her brood to hatch. My suspicion has always been that she was only able to hatch because of that event, and that her siblings died because they could not properly pip and had no help with breaking through their shells. At the time, I was too inexperienced to know what to look for in such a scenario, so unfortunately I was too late to help. That difficulty with hatching unassisted is what ended up putting me off of call ducks specifically, and why I'd hesitate to get into another variety that has its own hatching issues.

And no worries about forgetting to post! I do that sometimes, too! Then I realize I never posted and go back to a thread with my whole post sitting in the reply box, but someone's already jumped in to reply and my post is redundant at that point 😅

Good to hear that they don't have the bill problems, although there's still the issue of the hardened shell. Crash's story is nothing short of amazing, glad you were able to help her! I bet she's very close to you, since she was a loner growing up. On a completely different subject, I finished the second, and last silkied ameraucana thread. I loved reading through a project like that! Any other suggestions? I think I already follow most of the current breeding projects, but I know nothing about the breeding projects of the past

She is, she still hollers in greeting when she hears my or my mom's voice. 🤭 She lives with my chickens now, though, and has bonded pretty closely with my last silkied Red Cochin rooster, Roscoe.

I'll have to think about that! I follow a ton of breed threads from back in the day, but most are pretty dead nowadays. I do enjoy keeping up with The Moonshiner's Leghorn thread and Florida Bullfrog's threads (this one and this one) in the genetics and breeding section, not sure if that's quite what you're looking for? I don't think any other of the silkied breeds was posted about much on BYC beyond a few stray comments about woolly Svart Hona on their thread and silkied Seramas on one of the many threads about the Serama breed.

A Nora update! She's looking about the same as last time, though to me she looks like her eye is a bit less squinty. I haven't really done anything more for her beyond kept her safe and comfortable, so she's doing all her healing on her own at this point. 🙂

Still plenty of attitude, though 🥰

Of course, my chickens are nosy, so some of the others came by to see the shiny camera lens, too. Goofy birds!

Couple of Cochin pullets (with Mal still lurking in the background to fight off the evil cell phone taking pictures of his flock  )

Since I was outside, I thought I'd check in on the flock out at the outer coop as well.

Miss Judy and her big booty this morning ( @2ndTink ) :love

And a couple other pullets... oddly with very similar facial expressions to the ones in the other picture despite being completely different birds 🤭

Wowza, Miss Judy is looking round and fluffy and beautiful!:love if you ever have a couple of her eggies that need a warm place for 21 days, I'm sure I can oblige :celebrate

I'm glad Nora is doing well, she's just adorable too. Heck, all your chickens are adorable! I love the closeups 🤣

Haha, well I am pretty sure she's laying now! I'm just not confident I'd be able to figure out which eggs are hers specifically because they all lay these cute little almost-pinkish tan eggs with white speckles. :love

I'll probably have to split that coop this weekend so that I can start collecting eggs from the birds I know I want to hatch from for the Easter hatch along next week :th Can't believe how fast that came up!

This year is flying by! I'm setting eggs this Saturday and don't plan to set any again until July or August. "Plan"... lol.

If you need anything test hatched late summer let me know 🤣

Thanks pipd! I already (silently) follow the other peeps, but the Svart Hona thread is new to me! There's something about how you're describing Crash that just fits perfectly with the fact she's a call..don't know how to explain it. She just SOUNDS like a call duck

So glad to hear she's doing so well! What a little fighter, and what amazing care she received! Well done to both you and her🥰!

Incubator hatches are what I call "official" hatches, as they are the only ones I can plan. I've been planning to set some time in early April, so I can have Easter serama chicks (there will probably be a whole thread on this, if you'd like to follow, you are definitely more than welcome to do so). The next hatch will be in early August, that's when the current pullets and cockerels will have their first birthday. That'll be a Tsouloufati hatch. Hoping to eventually transition the Tsouloufates to a 100% naturally brooded state. OK I should NOT have rambled so much. I'm in a constant state of blabla.gif
