And for those you grow cabbage and get the wormon the plant.....mix 1 cup flour and 1 tbsp. cayenne papper and place that around the base of the plant and the worm won't come near them. Crushed eggs shells work good too, mainly if you use both methods at the same time

No worms here

Haven't gotten the courage up to plant mine yet. Last time I planted before April 20th (our last frost day) I lost a whole garden in one night. Has gone from almost 90* 3 days ago to low 70's for the last 2. DH had to scrape frost off this morning. Didn't even open the shed door today for the chicks to have fresh air. Afraid they would get a chill.

Trying to figure out the best way to garden this year. We are looking at putting down a patio. I got 100+ 18inch square patio blocks from freecycle but I've got to build a frame and get some fill dirt before putting it down as the yard slopes from side to side. Have to wait for my first disability check before I can even start.

I have 3 huge tractor tires and 2 a bit smaller that I've been filling with dirt from time to time. I'm trying to decide if I really want to do all that work or use 5gallon buckets this year and build beds next year.

Decision...decisions...decisions.................

I use to live in Virginia, I think I might be homesick.

Totally agreed!!!!

Also, just so you know... Onions are a natural deterrent for cabbage moths, which lay those eggs and give you worms all over them. So those onion and cabbage mixes are great. Mixing in leeks and onions with strawberries is a good too... they keep off pests and intensify the strawberries flavor!!!!

(Basil and Tomatoes are awesome too!!!!)

FEATHERBABY = = = =

I don't know why the Gardenias won't grow. I just planted the first ones without any research.

After that, I did as you described and made sure it was acidic soil and used Azalea fertilizer.

I planted one under a tree - - shade and I planted another in the full sun.

I have bought from different places - - to ensure quality.

I never tried to grow them while I was in South Florida - - - so I don't know if it is me or them .........
Maybe somebody else in our area will join in and tell use what the secret is to growing Gardenias in North Florida.

In the meantime. I planted two Jasmine plants, so let's see how I do with them.

Thanks....We are a pretty good 3 hours from there, I'd say. We are located just 14 miles from the NC border.

Vfem.....thanks for the tip with the onions. We had one worm...if you look in the pic you'll see the hole in the one cabbage leaf.....but hubby caught him and squished him and then we put the crushed eggs and flour-cayenne pepper mix in and haven't had a problem. Maybe my onions aren't strong enough yet to make the worm

1:We have the Bolens Tiller form Lowes Hardware. We love it.
2: We use tractor tires for raised beds. This year we're using an old bath-tub for carrots.
3: We have rain barrels to collect water in and then of a night, when we have gone without rain for a while, we use a hose and water the garden...which is somewheres along the lines of 100 ft. wide by 200 ft long
4: Soak seeds for a couple hours before planting.
5: Chicken coop cleanings make for good fertilizer

Sure hope you receive great therapy from your garden as the rest of us do.

I planted tomatoes, corn, peas, pole beans, and bush beans today. AND I am excited to have gotten some "mac beans" which have been kept passed down in my family for several generations now, and this is my first year with those.

My DH and I just finished adding a 6 x 15 addition onto my existing garden space. This is the SECOND addition this year - - - since January 2010.

I added the first addition for corn and vining plants. This second addition is for a second planting of corn.

We rototilled it tonight and I added some blood and bone meal to the soil. I also added some composte.

NOW, I have to wait about a week before I plant anything. The neighbor dogs go crazy when I use blood meal or fish emulsion. I have to give them a few days / nights to find their way over and dig up the garden. In about a week, I will be able to plant without fear of having my seeds disbursed.
