PLANTED GARDEN TODAY - anybody planting yet?

VFEM,

WOW - - your strawberries look huge !

TONY - -

We planted grapes for the first time last year. You need to check with a LOCAL nursery to see what grows best in your area.
We are very limited with what will grow in FLORIDA.

If you live anywhere near DEER . . . .You will need to fence your grape stalks to prevent the deer from munching on them.

There are several ways of stinging / supporting grapes. Each method has its pros and cons.
This is something you should goggle and decide which one works BEST for you.
Some methods are for saving space, some methods are for ease of maintenance (mowing, etc) and others are for convience of picking the grapes.

RIR,
we bought our grape vines at lowes and tractor supply so far this year haven't checked the nurserys yet. ours r 1 to 2 year old seedling plants. we bought the grapes for makeing homemade wine, jelly and for the kids to eat the fruit also. depending on what kind u buy depends on what u r wanting to do with the grapes and depends on ur climate/growing zone. we bought niagras(a white grape), concords, this will probably be spelled wrong but katabwahs(i think they r a red grape) and i think we have another kind or 2. was thinking we had elviras also which r a purple grape. most of these all make great wines so it is why we picked the kinds we did.

my one outside already hasn't woke up yet so i haven't planted the new ones yet. we r going to build for them like a post on each side with a post across the top with wire fenceing all the way across them attached for them to vine and climb it. i'm hopeing if done right it will support the vines as each will have its own arbor. i've never looked to see how others have theirs so i hope that will work for them. we do in winter for ours what vfem said. as far as best to get depends on what u want to use the fruit for and what ur tastes r. we like different ones for different reasons.
hope that helps some,
silkie

i bought my first and still the best one from the local wholesale club. i bought 3 at the same time and only one kept growing, they were supposed to be sub zero vines-all Red Canadice at that time. i've bought 5 more different varieties since then and they have done fine but they are still young and not producing grapes yet.

i don't do anything to my grapes during the year other than harvest the grapes in the fall, water it often when we go through dry spells, occasionally pick off dying leaves. and i always make sure a rose is growing somewhere close to the vines since they are beneficial to each other.

btw: seedless grapes grown in northern colder climates will still produce seeds!

I am giving away my lettuce because there is so much of it and I am afraid that it will bolt soon with temperatures warming up

im gonna try and put pictures of my garden up tomorrow i've got egg plant, peas, habaneros, bell peppers, cucumbers, watermelons, Armenian cucumbers. cantaloupe, datil peppers, carrots, iceberg lettuce, dill, parsley, rosemary, sweet basil, tomatoes, corn and i think that's it.

TWO THINGS for my fellow gardeners. . . .

I have found that my local ace hardware has the best price on veg PLANTS. . . .
My local store is selling plants 4 pack for $ 1.49.

I do start most of my garden from seed - - - but there is always something I am struggling to get to germinate or there is something new I want to try.

SECOND ITEM:
Why datil peppers ? ? ?
I see them all over the place. . . . but what do you do with them? I use the jalapeno pepper if I am looking for a hot pepper.
Does the datil taste better? ? ? ? ?

there are a bajillion peppers that taste better than the icky jalepeno.

I used to grow thai dragons...but they do way to well in the heat, and started to take over.... mowing the lawn required a gas mask and hazmat gear.

I AM OFF TO THE GARDEN, MATHMAN!

well datil peppers have a different taste than jalapenos do. datils to me are spicier but they give stuff like beans a really nice flavor and jalapenos they give them a good flavor but sometimes it just takes over. and plus have you ever heard of jalapeno jelly? i haven't lol
