PLANTED GARDEN TODAY - anybody planting yet?

I let it grow and hand pick it in sections as my chickens LOVE garden grass and weeds. My wife is happy because the growth stays low and the sun gets to the plants we want, and the chickens are happy because they gets LOADS of "salad", and I like it because it it FREE FOOD for them.

Thanks Guys... good idea on the weeds

I picked about a 3 foot patch last night and it looks soooooo pretty being weed free, but I really dont think the WHOLE garden is gonna be weed free. I swear someone snuck in and planted grass seed, the grass is sooo pretty nice and green, guess the chickens will love it! This grass is the deep rootin kind that will take your plant with it when you pull if your not careful. It doesnt seem like we had all this grass in the gardens last year?!?!

Anyways......... we have some peppers growin, almost ready to pick. Looks like we should be havin some squash in the next week or 2.

Hubby and I spent 2 hours the other night weeding. No fun... but we got everything that mattered at the time. We'll finish around the fruit trees another night. I do have to say I am grateful for the stirrup hoe we have, a lot less bending over and pulling this way. I just rake up clumps and through them in the chickens' runs.

We're in a heavily wooded area, so in addition to the usual weeds, we also have runner roots from ash trees and sumac that send up shoots that you have to dig out the whole root otherwise it grows back. I thought I got most of them when I tilled this spring, I guess I was wrong.

Also have 4 sunflowers coming up ... I didn't plant any!! Oh, well, let it grow and save seed for the chickens

me either. I think the squirrels planted some of my wild bird seed. (they are coming up in small clumps, lol) Some of those BOSS are really pretty with many branching flowers.

Getting ready to do a rain dance around here. My rainbarrels are bone dry and veggies just aren't the same on water from the hose. Yeah it's "well" water but it's from a treated community well. Seeds I've put down for flower have sprouted and croaked because it's been so hot and dry. Would love to have a couple days of just nice soft rain. I'd even give up a weekend for it!!

Yep, we have volunteer sunflowers as well. Whether from the wild bird food, or the sunflower seeds we saved last year for the chickens... we don't know.

We just have 2 huge (and about 8 smallish) sunflowers popping up all around the compost bin at the end of the deck.
