Hi everyone! We noticed about 3 days ago that One of our hens (flock of 6) has some black scabs on her comb. Today it’s turning whiteish, kind of like mold? None of the other hens have this condition and their behaviors seem the same.

It is currently around 70 degrees where we live so the bugs are starting to come out. Could they be bug bites? Or fowl pox? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi cheepcheap,

Those look like regular scabs. The white is the skin healing around the injury and the black is most likely dried out blood. Comb injuries like this are really common and can happen from other chickens pecking, a chicken getting startled and whacking it's head on something, or even just from a chicken pacing in front of some wire.

If it starts to worsen, let us know! I hope it goes well for you!
