Please help! Chicken bleeding!

This is the growth

See how it has the same texture as the red comb? I think it is just comb that has been injured and turned black or purple. This is going to take some time to heal, and the black part could possibly fall off. I would get some Vetericyn at a local feed store, and just spray it twice a day. Comb injuries are painful, so I wouldn’t even handle it or mess with it other than the Vetericyn or perhaps applying some neosporin ointment once or twice a day.

I would try to figure out how she was injured, or if she was pecked or attacked, why. Is she low in pecking order, is there overcrowding, or is she acting ill, which can invite pecking. Do you have a young cockerel who possibly hurt her while trying to mate?

I have some vetericyn but is the eye kind. Would that work? And could the Black part just be dried blood on the comb? We do have a young cockerel that has just started mating with the hens. What happens if it does fall off?

There’s also dried blood around the comb, so I don’t think it was bruised, I think it was cut. I also saw part of the scratch.

Yes, you can use the eye vetericyn, just dab it on with a QTip or drop it. The jet black on the sides of the purple comb is blood for sure, but you don’t have to remove it necessarily. I tend to believe the more you mess with it, the more it may bleed, and it will be uncomfortable. It should heal up okay.

Yes, you can use the eye kind, it's basically the same thing. Probably a good idea to pick up some of the spray when you can for the future, just to have on hand. The comb is probably bruised and traumatized, not much you can do but let it heal and see what happens. If it falls off eventually, it will be fine. Chickens that get frostbite on their combs have it happen, it heals up and they just have a smaller comb. And there is dried blood, and it will look black. It will eventually dry up and flake off. I would just try to make sure the injury itself is as clean as you can get it without causing more pain or injury. Why veterycin is good, you can spray it on and leave it. I would separate the cockerel for a while, if you intend to keep him. They can be really rough while their hormones are raging. It's entirely possible that he caused that injury or contributed to it. They often grab the back of head or right behind the comb with their beak to hang on while mounting. Young ones haven't learned manners or technique yet. Some never do.
