We have a 10-month old hen who has been egg bound since yesterday; we have tried bathing her in warm epsom salt water, applying Vaseline to the vent and giving her calcium via a crushed up tablet mash. Are there any other tips we can try? She is trying very hard to lay the egg and in obvious distress, it’s like her vent is folded or twisted shut and not letting it pass. We can feel the egg, but it isn’t exposed at all and we can’t get it to show.
She is starting to bleed and we’re considering the fact that we’ll have to probably put her down by the end of the day. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Oh no, poor thing!

Have you tried soaking her in v. warm water for a long period of time?

Our hen's egg broke and the shell softened and came out, but unless the only other option is DEATH I don't think breaking it inside her is a v. good idea.

Where is she bleeding from?

We did try soaking her in warm water with Epsom salts for about 15-20 minutes, then put her in a dark laying box all alone as most informational sites recommended. I don’t think the egg is broken, but rather she’s just bleeding from excessive straining; it seems right around the edge of her vent her skin is torn somewhere. It’s like the egg is right there wanting to come out, but behind some muscular membrane. Is there any way their oviduct can get twisted or knotted? That’s what it seems like, at least.

I haven’t experienced this before, but I would try to lubricate her vent and try to manipulate the egg to get the it out. Place her in a warm and humid room onna moist warm towel on a heating pad. This would do the same as a warm bath and would be safer. Is there any prolapse of her vent?
