Please Help! Hen acting listless, has a pale comb and diarrhea

She's acting perkier, ate some organic Cheerios, brown rice and sweet potato Triscuits, plain full fat Greek yogurt, and a scrambled egg. She drank quite a bit of her medicated water. (I think the salty Triscuits helped with that) She's been "talking" more, her comb is less pale, and is alternating between regular poop and diarrhea.

The downside is last night she was alternating between breathing normally and breathing heavily, this morning she's only been breathing heavily. She's outside getting some fresh air and stretching her legs right now.

Keep up with what you are doing and hopefully she pulls out of it soon. Eating, talking and comb color are a good indicator of health. I know with a couple of my birds that are huge on the talking, when they stop yammering on, this is always signal something is not right with them.

It is still possible your bird ate something toxic and it is wearing off. But the meds won't hurt her either.

Keep it all up and keep us posted too! I sure hope she makes a full recovery!!

OH I am so SORRY Bella!!

I feel so badly for you. You sure loved her and she had a wonderful life with you and her flock. I truly hope your heavy heart can heal soon.

Now I'm worried about the rest of my flock, do you think what she had was contagious? Since she seemed to be getting better and seemed lonely I let the rest of my flock free range with her for a little bit yesterday.

Should I let the flock see her body before we bury her?

If you haven't wormed your hens lately, it might be a good idea. Sorry for your loss.

As enola has mentioned, it would be a good idea to worm everybody in your flock now. Free rangers are susceptible to worms. And if she indeed did die from an overload, no doubt the rest of the flock is just as loaded. As for other pathogens that might be contagious, it is hard to say unless you had a vet do a necropsy on her. I wouldn't be too concerned she was contagious. Most diseases make themselves apparent through secondary infections like runny noses, breathing issues, diarrhea and other things.

I would not let the others see her. I did that once and the flock sort of freaked out. They don't understand this sort of thing so it is best they think she just wandered off somewhere. If she had a good buddy, they may mourn the loss. I have seen this happen in my flocks.
