Hatching

Hello! I have quite a few questions as we are fairly new to having ducks (we have 4, 1 mallard and 3 pekins)
We have owned them a little over a year and were told it would probably be unlikely to see a broody duck care for a nest long enough to hatch but when our mallard started the process we decided to see what would happen.
We are now 27 days into that today. She started with 15 eggs. But over the last couple days the number has dropped down to 8 or 9 from what we can tell. There are no signs of broken shells. Where could these eggs have gone? Do mother ducks clear out eggs they know won't hatch? Or are we more likely looking at a predator of some kind?

Her nest in our coop which is far out in the back yard right where our woods begin. The routine since we got them has been that the coop doors remain open daily so they have free access to our large pond all day and then we close up the coop at dusk. This has worked fine for the adult ducks but obviously isn't very safe for her ducklings.

Provided we have any hatch here in the next couple days should we move the mother duck and her babies to a new coop much closer to our house? Would it be alright to move them all like that as they hatch as long as we keep her with them?

Last one... we noticed an abundance of flies in the coup today. My husband found maggots on one of the eggs in the nest. Is this a normal occurrence? Should we remove that egg? By the time he discovered that mama duck had come back to the nest from a quick break at the pond and got right back on the nest and started hissing at us so we left it alone.

Any advice will would me much appreciated! We are very new to this as you can see haha and I just want to do the right things for mom and her babies.

Wait till they all hatch before you move her is the best thing to do...Can you close her off inside for a couple of days?....I was able to move my Hen only after she hatched....Then I put all the Ducklings in a pail and tucked Momma under my arm and moved them to a safe pen for her to raise them....
Best of luck with the hatch....

Get rid of those maggots check all eggs there maybe some rotting and that is what is drawing the flies and they are laying eggs in the nest. If any eggs are viable this isn't good for those. You may have to clean the nest out and start fresh with the eggs that are still good. Do this while mom is off the nest even if you have to close the door while keeping her off for a few minutes she'll get back on Once your through. If me I'd candle the remaining eggs to make sure there are still some alive. Handle carefully in case there are some rotten.

Momma ducks will definitely get rid of eggs if she knows they aren't going to hatch. I have found them rolled quite some distance from the nest (100 feet plus!) as far away as she can get them, or hide them. So she has likely hidden some from you.

Yes definitely get rid of the maggoty egg, but I wonder if maybe an egg broke, and attracted the maggots, and they aren't actually in the egg he saw, just some on it? They will still probably find their way in, if she doesn't get the chance to move it out.

As far as ducklings, you will need to watch the other older ducks as momma introduces the babies. Some older ducks don't like babies, but some are fine, so it will depend on your flock. If the older ones attack, then you will need to keep them separated until they can behave. If they all get along, that would be great!

Best of luck on at least a few hatching! :fl

editing to add - after rereading my wording, i don't mean that momma ducks will *always* get rid of bad eggs, just that she most definitely can! :D

Thank you so much for the advice!

We did clear out all of the bad hay, rid of all the maggots and flies. And shaped a new clean nest and quickly returned her eggs. She hopped right back on no problem.

Still no hatching which has us believing today is the true 28th day. Hopefully.

We are down to for eggs and I just can't figure it out. 1 or 2 go missing every day. We kept her locked in all day yesterday and at this point she isn't really leaving the nest anyway so what the heck is happening here? There is no signs of shells? I shudder to think there is a snake living in or under the coop with access somehow we can't figure it out. Unless she's just giving them somewhere REALLY well.

Here's hoping today is the day and she gets at least a couple babies out of this before they all vanish :(

This is my fear as well. The most logical as we cannot find any hidden eggs. Do you think it would be ok to move the nest closer to our house? She seems very unbothered by us. We cleaned real well in there and made her a new nest and she got right back on...
