Hello, it is day 17 and my first quail ever has hatched today (or last night) and it just wants to snuggle up to the warm rice sock for the last 5 hours. It is 94 F in the shirt cave it is in and it just sleeps. When I change out the rice sock, it peeps very vigorously with quite the volume for a tiny chick then goes back to sleep with the new hot rice sock. It has shown no interest in the water or food. It was running around with vigor in the incubator before I put it in the baby chick tote.

Should I be worried? Should I be doing anything? Also I live in Canada and NutriDrench does not seem to exist here (I wish we had it, it seems to be one of the most recommended on this forum!) :barnie

I think it just had a long time of hatching, hatcherys send chicks at 12 hours old and some r still tired but just wait and give him/her some time and by tomorrow post if the chick is up and moving. Yolk sack will count as water and feed for 2-3 days

Oh wow I heard that for quail the yolk sac counts for like a day since they're smaller so I was worried since he's only sleeping but that's good to know, thank you! I will be sure to update tomorrow and really hope the others hatch soon so he has company! :D

If he isn’t drinking water by the time he is 13-14 hours old then contact this thread again!

They do sleep a lot for the first day. It should be eating and drinking by the time it hits 24 hours old, that's about the extent of the yolk for quail. I always wet the crumble for the first few weeks to help hydrate and prevent a bit of feed waste, they can be messy eaters. You may need to teach it where the water is by gently dipping it's beak in the water a few times, not all at once but periodically until it goes to it on it's own. You may also need to warm the water itself a bit since you don't have an ambient heat source to warm the entire area.

Yesterday it was pecking at the water and food 2 times when I came to change the rice sock, I'm not sure if it actually got any water or food but it showed interest? There's two in the brooder now and they still just nap by the heat. Since it showed interest, do I still need to be worried?

Also two more have hatched in the incubator this morning. :jumpy:yesss:

Sounds like it's figuring it out. It only takes one and everyone else will follow. I wouldn't be worried, just keep an eye on them to make sure the first hatchling is drinking and eating today for sure.

One of them is drinking for sure, not eating food yet.

I have one chick that is concerning me though.. i see one often actively chasing other chicks and pecking them and dragging them by the foot.. Do I need to separate it? :barnie I have an evil chick
